"Roma non fu fatta in un giorno."
Just as Rome was not built in a day, learning Italian will require a little work and practice. Starting a new language is both exhilarating and frightening because you have to start everything from the beginning. One can feel a little lost, even helpless, but this feeling disappears quickly as the excitement and the novelty builds. And rest assured, the Italian vocabulary is one of the easier languages to learn as there are some similarities with English and common roots.
But even so, taking an Italian language learning class is still a good idea. So aren't you lucky that there's a multitude available in the bustling city around you! From beginners to advanced classes, group classes or individual classes, there is something for everyone. You can also find cultural activities, coffee meet-ups, movie showings, cooking classes, discussions, seminars and more, related to Italy in the city! Leeds is a perfect city to learn the beauty of the language of love.
Take Italian lessons at the Leeds Language College
What better place to learn Italian than a college created just for learning languages. The Leeds Language College offers classes to learn Italian, French and Spanish along with helping international students learn English. It is possible to attend classes 20, 15, 9 or 6 hours per week. There are 4 college terms per year: Winter (January to March), Spring (April to June), Summer (July-September) and Autumn (October-December).
A free level test is carried out at the beginning of the course to guide the future learners of the Italian language as much as possible. You'll have to make an appointment for the thirty-minute test. The results will help the instructors place you in the best class for you, tailored to your skills and needs.
Private lessons are also available and customizable according to the needs of students: level, location, frequency... They range at about ÂŁ25 per session. Courses for children are also available as an introduction to the language, as well as a la carte courses, very personalized for those wishing to work a particular language point.

A great way to immerse yourself in the culture and the language is also to join an Italian society and the one at the University of Leeds is a popular and fun option, even winning the Riley Award for 'Best New Society' in 2015.
The society organizes lots of Italian themed events where students can get together with other Italian students or those passionate about the language, to laugh, have fun, practice their Italian and more through events such as:
A large point of attraction is that every year the society organizes a group trip to the country of Italy itself, what better way to get immersed in the language! Last years trip was to Rome and was a great success.
The Leeds Beckett University offers part-time classes on up to 10 different languages each semester. You can choose from Arabic, Mandarin, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and yes, Italian too. Students learning at the University will also benefit from the award-winning library which is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year! Amongst the options of taking a language course, advanced conversation classes and a total immersion in the Italian language, perhaps you also want to deepen your knowledge alone.
You're in luck because the Library, and in particular the Language Resource Center, provides many documents for self-taught language learning:
