The subject of maths provides us with a framework to learn various rules of life, such as distance and speed, much like a language gives us the tools to communicate with grammar and vocabulary. Without it, we’d have no sense of time, no currency to purchase with, and no buildings around us.
As well as being a subject that has withstood the test of time and retained significance for as long as we’ve lived, it’s also an academic field that’s alive and constantly growing. Every day there are new developments that give us insights into how the world around us works, and how we can interact with it.
While many people would have you believe that it’s a redundant subject to study at school with no real-world application, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Just take a moment to think, without maths how would we solve logic-based problems such as how to construct a bridge or calculate the measurements to install a swimming pool?
On a more personal level, maths can help us make sense of our financial situation and give us the tools to better manage our money.
Getting to grips with all the sums involved in taxes for example or even something as simple as budgeting is crucial if you want to achieve financial success in life.
Even just knowing how to do quick mental arithmetic can be very useful, like when you’re at the till and you need to give the exact change with a line of people behind you.
The subject is deeply grounded in logic and reasoning, and by learning the skills you need to tackle problems rationally, you set yourself up well to deal with issues you face in your day-to-day life.
For whatever reason, Maths is an often maligned subject - especially at school. It’s one that many students dread, and few seem deeply passionate about. This is probably in large part due to the endless amount of sums you’re faced with in rapid-fire fashion. The whiteboard often displays Matrix-like rows of numbers, letters, and symbols, and you are supposed to absorb this information and regurgitate it ad nauseum.
Or, at least, that’s how it can feel.
There’s no doubt about it: maths can be an enormously challenging subject, and requires a lot of active focus and determination to persevere with. However, what’s on the other side of this monumental effort is well worth the effort. If you can stick with the subject, you will be greatly rewarded for it.
This process can be streamlined with the help of a tutor; someone who can take the seemingly dull content of maths and turn it into something much more interesting.
By working closely with a maths tutor, you can better see what there is to be excited about with the subject, as, chances are, they will have a passion for it.
This passion can be infectious, and before long, you might find that you’re itching to do more sums purely for the fun of it. That’s the key in many cases: to enjoy the process.
The more you are able to tap into your inner motivations, those which focus on the process of learning a subject rather than the outcome, the more you’re likely to get out of it.
As such, you can turn the endless drudgery of doing sums into an exciting series of problems that you have to intellectually overcome.
While the joy of tackling difficult problems will come more naturally to some than others, one thing you’ll surely gain from studying maths is improved cognitive function.
While we can’t promise you that you’ll become smarter just by studying maths, many experts say that as a result of the concrete and abstract thinking the subject demands, the brain is put through the wringer.
This can help you to develop your logical thinking and reasoning skills, which can better equip you for other logic-based problems life throws your way.
It also makes you more employable.
If you can prove that you’re capable of dealing with difficult problems, breaking them down into their individual parts before churning out a solution, then you can do well in many careers.
But maths also prepares you for a number of different careers, in case you’re interested in crunching numbers for a living.
A keen understanding of maths isn’t just useful for being an accountant though, but also for the varied fields of finance, economics, and even astronomy.
It’s a subject that gives you a highly valuable skillset, which can be applied to a large number of different jobs.
One of the most compelling reasons to work with a private tutor is that they can help you pinpoint your strengths, and guide you towards a career if that’s what you’re looking for.
With a breadth of knowledge, a tutor is able to teach you the fundamentals of the subject, while also following your curiosities to see what you really take to.
The result of this process can be a eureka moment in which you realise what it is you want to use maths for in the future.
Even if it doesn’t lead directly to a career though, there’s a good chance that you’ll pick up transferable skills to take with you whatever you end up doing.
If you’re in Leicester or the surrounding areas, you could find a local tutor through the Superprof website.
By using the search function on the website, you can search for the right maths tutor for your needs taking into account their level of teaching experience, hourly rate, and previous student ratings.
You can also choose to either take classes either in-person or online via webcam, if you prefer to study from the convenience of your own home.
You can even just give the class a go first, since many of the tutors offer free sample classes to first-time students.
