German is one of the most studied foreign languages at school and in higher education, but you don't have to be a school student to sign up for German classes! Of course, private tuition is great to support you throughout the GCSE or A-Level curriculum but you can also be a professional, middle-aged person who wants to learn a new skill! And private lessons are surely the way to do this when you are no longer in education.
If you are an older learner, you might be interested to know (or perhaps you already know and this is what drew you to it!) that speaking German increases your job opportunities in your own country but also abroad. There are so many German-speaking countries, as we'll see below, so being a German speaker will definitely be an attractive skill on your CV.
Having this language under your belt also means that travel to Germany or other German-speaking countries is made much easier. You speak the language, you can communicate and enjoy your stay while also making friends with the locals.
And even though many people in Germany do admittedly speak English fluently, it seems rude to just let them get on with it and not even make an effort to speak to them in their own language, doesn't it?
German is descended from a Germanic dialect and is officially spoken in Germany but also Austria, Liechtenstein, some parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, Brazil (yep, it's not just Portuguese there!), Poland, Romania, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and, believe it or not, Namibia!
Add to these 100 million speakers another 100 million learners of German and now you can start to picture how this language is such a big and important language on our continent and globally!
It may surprise you to know that Scotland and Germany share very strong links with one another. Trade links the two of them, on the one hand, but also culture is another area where they share similarities.
In terms of academia, the two countries have a lot in common with Germany being Scotland's biggest research partner in Europe, and the leading universities share ties.
Even Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister, has confirmed that Scotland has a strong relationship with Germany and is keen to keep developing that cultural bond. Another Scottish politician who advocates the relations between the two countries is Angus Robertson of the Scottish National Party, or SNP, who speaks fluent German after his German-born mother moved to Edinburgh.
The University of Edinburgh offers German courses for beginners and more, and you can find further Modern Foreign Language courses at Edinburgh College.
If it's private courses you are after, you can find more tailored courses at InLingua Edinburgh or by choosing another independent teaching establishment.
Of course, one of the best ways to advance in German is to hire a language tutor, which you can do via Superprof!
You don't have to sit up late at night reading through German textbooks or printing out documents - if you hire a tutor they can set out a proper programme of study for you and show you what you should be doing in order to learn in the most sensible and natural way. You can't run before you can walk, so you should take the advice from a tutor on learning the basics of German first before progressing to the more complicated grammar and vocabulary lessons.
A German tutor will quickly assess your level and set you tasks to help you reach your goal step by step. They might also suggest doing some extra 'homework' such as finding a German group near you so that you can socialise with German speakers and pick up the language in a relaxed setting from true native speakers.
Even if this isn't part of their process, it might be an idea to ask around in your community to see if anyone wants to change lessons for free - some people love to practice their English by speaking to Brits in England so you could both benefit from it and build a new friendship!
You don't have to be living in a bustling city to find a specialized German tutor with highly-rated lessons on offer. Our Superprof tutors are located all over the country (and world!) so you are sure to find someone who is working nearby and who can meet you in a place that is convenient for you both. If, however, you find a tutor who lives further afield, you might consider having online lessons which can be just as effective.
There are currently over 50 German tutors available to teach students in Edinburgh alone, with lessons starting at just £15 per hour in some cases - go and check out their online profiles to discover your new tutor - here, you can find their hourly rates, where they are located, a short description of their experience and services, their accreditation, any ratings that have been left by former students, and much more.
There are so many reasons to learn German that only positives can come from taking lessons. With languages, practice makes perfect so you can bet that if you are on a course and you are taking additional lessons then you are almost certain to pick up the language fluently than your fellow students because you are getting that extra practice in.
So what are you waiting for? Go and speak Deutsch!!
