Nursing: a Noble Calling

The whole world knows about the medical professions' long history. Starting with Hippocrates of Kos, the discoveries made by men of science have shaped what we call medicine today. Few (if any) women ever feature in the annals of medicine though they, too, were prominent in the field. After all, who bandaged wounds, mixed poultices and delivered babies?

In the 18th Century, one forward-thinking woman gave the caregiving profession legitimacy. Not satisfied with operating in doctors' shadows, Florence Nightingale established standards of care for the nurses she taught. She showed them how to properly clean and bandage a wound to prevent infection and how to keep the patients' wards sanitary.

Florence had a keen, statistical mind. She put those skills to use in nursing to track diseases, rates of recovery and other pertinent medical information. She pioneered the use of pole area diagrams. These visuals are used still today, not just in medicine but anywhere there's data to be compiled and reviewed. Except we know them today as pie charts.

Why We Need More Nurses

For all of her progressive thinking, Florence Nightingale insisted on gender barriers. It wasn't for her to perform surgery, or any other woman, as far as she was concerned. Such advanced skill and knowledge could only be the purview of men. But that didn't stop her from running her nursing programs as doctors ran their hospitals and surgeries.

If one were to discount Ms Nightingale for anything, it would be her rigid adherence to that principle. Granted, it was the morals of the times that formed her position. But in this aspect, she harmed the nursing profession. Insisting it was women's work, half the population was denied the opportunity to become a nurse solely because of their gender. That disparity persists to this day.

We see it most graphically in the Nursing and Midwifery Council registry numbers. Just a little over 10% of all nurses are male in the UK. As for male midwives, that number is even lower, standing at just over a half of a percent. And just under 40% of all nurses on the registry are over 40 years of age - no discrimination intended. Nursing is hard on the body (and mind!). It should go without saying that an older nursing staff may be less able to do all the physically demanding work the profession requires.

That's why the nursing degree programs at the University of Bradford are so enticing. You can choose their adult nursing program to take care of grown up patients. Or maybe their Public Health and Community Wellbeing course would suit you better. That way, you can take care of all the patients in a community. Or how about Mental Health nursing? As more socially influential people step forward with their mental health woes, they take away the stigma of mental health care.

Some of University of Bradford's nursing programs last for three years while others offer an additional placement year. If time is pressing for you, you might for their nursing associate apprenticeship program. It takes two years to complete and leaves the door open to further education. After graduation, the University of Bradford nursing program will help place you in a job best suited to your capabilities.
