People tend to overlook Queen's University when scouting around for a nursing program. That's a real shame because Queen's course of study is one of the most accessible courses in the UK. It's not subpar, either. Ninety percent of the students have stated they are fully satisfied with their course of study.
The School of Nursing and Midwifery faculty includes members of the international medical research community. They bring years of experience in their fields and innovative teaching methods to Belfast nursing classes. Far different than the more formal atmosphere found in other nursing programs around the UK, Queen's University nursing program offers a cutting edge, modern take on nursing.
Even after you pass your courses and register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a requirement to practise, Queen's University nursing program isn't quite done with you. You may continue your studies at the postgraduate level to specialise in a particular type of nursing. Those include surgical nursing, trauma nursing, hospice nursing and many more. And because the medical field is constantly evolving, Queen's University offers continuing professional development classes.
One would have to be completely out of touch to not know about the UK-wide nurse shortage. It doesn't just affect National health Service (NHS) hospitals. Schools, elder care and hospice facilities, mental health and trauma centres... they all are desperate for qualified nurses to join their staff.
Nursing schools in Belfast as elsewhere in the UK enjoy fairly constant enrolment numbers. However, the number of nursing program students in Belfast is consistently lower than other nursing schools. As you have chosen (or are thinking about) a career in nursing, you'll find that Belfast's Queen's University study program will equip you with everything you need to know to meet the challenge.
It's not just the technical skills you need to become a nurse or midwife that makes studying in Belfast a smart move. In many aspects, living and learning in Belfast is less expensive than elsewhere in the UK. Particularly in the larger cities, where the best nursing programs are taught.
If nursing and midwifery consisted only of technical aspects, becoming a nurse would be a relatively simple matter of learning those skills. However, things like drawing blood, interpreting saturation levels and properly positioning nasogastric tubes involve a degree of humanity that technical competences cannot accommodate. For instance, before intubating an alert patient, you must explain why they need to be intubated and the process of intubation. You must also tell them they may feel some discomfort during the process and afterwards, when the tube is in place.
The 'human side' of nursing is a formal job requirement. The mandate came about after a scandal in one UK hospital saw patients die of what amounted to neglect by the nursing staff. This shocking event spurred a committee to investigate the event. Their findings are summarised in the Francis Report. This report led to a new nursing initiative, the 6C.
The six Cs in question are care, compassion, courage, communication, commitment and competence. Obviously, these are personal qualities. But, like other human qualities, they can be taught. Fortunately, the Queen's University Nursing and Midwifery program does a stellar job of it.
We all learned about compassion fatigue during the pandemic. It's when a person cares so much, delivers so much compassion that they have none left for self-care. It's a common reason for nurses to leave the profession they spent so long in; so long studying for. Especially later in your nursing training, when you're doing your practical work, you may find yourself skating around the edges of compassion fatigue, ready to chuck it all away.
