Could there be a better place to study nursing? London is home to the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery at King's College, the first-ever school of nursing in the world. It's the UK's top-ranked nursing program and consistently lists second in the world, according to QS World University rankings. London is also home to the Royal College of Nursing, your future trade union.
As you likely know, to practise nursing, either as a nurse or nursing associate, you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. With that step completed, you may choose to work in a doctor's surgery or a hospital, in a school - they need nurses too! - or any other health centre. Naturally, as part of the registration process, you must prove that you have successfully completed your training.
It would be hard to qualify studying to be a nurse as gruelling but it is intensive, and there's a lot to know. And if you decide to specialise, maybe to qualify for work on the infectious diseases ward or gerontology, you can count on having to know much more about that area of nursing. So while nobody could say learning about nursing is too difficult, few would say it's easy. Luckily, help is on the way.
London's premier school of nursing is named after the remarkable woman who defined what nursing is. Before Florence Nightingale, nursing was not a profession; it was 'woman's work'. She brought not only order and formality to the field of nursing, but also formulated the field's founding philosophies. Those ideas remained informal underpinnings of the nursing profession for more than 100 years after her death. They were finally formalised in 2012, after a scandalous event at a Staffordshire hospital.
The Six Cs are: care, compassion, commitment, competence, communication, and courage.
It should come as no surprise that these personal traits are vital to the nursing profession. Obviously, nurses must be competent; they hold patients' lives in their hands. Likewise, they must be compassionate, committed and caring. Some new nursing students wonder about the communication and courage aspects. Nurses must be able to relate well with those they tend to. They must be able to transmit their feelings of concern and care, and they have to hear their patients - not just listen to them.
And courage? It's hard to see grievously wounded people and yet put aside your feelings to tend to them properly. Losing a patient is never easy but nurses must return, again and again, to the risk of losing yet another. These aspects an others of the nursing profession demand staggering levels of fortitude. Nurses must be courageous not just for themselves - to come through it all intact, but for their patients as well. Patients could hardly lean on anyone weak-hearted, after all.
The ongoing UK nursing shortage is both a worrying situation and a disturbing trend. Our population is getting older and people, in general, are getting sicker. Still, despite lucrative offers from private sector healthcare centres, nursing rolls are lacking. This situation makes burnout for working nurses a very real concern, especially as they routinely work extended shifts to cover the lag.
If staffing the nursing ranks is the best reason to become a nurse, job security has to be the second-best. Patients will always need the type of care you're currently learning. And, as more nursing specialities form, you will always have the opportunity to cross-train into the new sub-speciality.
Dedicating your life to help humanity is no easy task. Neither is learning everything you have to know to do that work. Fortunately, you can get help from a Superprof nursing tutor. These masters have nursing experience; they were once where you are now. Taking their six-C oath to heart, they can coach you through the more stressful aspects of nursing.
They don't stint on the qualifications aspects, either. They're ready to share all the study tips and tricks they used in College. They can quiz you on everything from body parts to saturation levels. And even better: Nursing Superprofs can coach you online or in person!
