Learn to play tennis with the help of a Superprof coach

Whether you're looking to win the French Open or Wimbledon or just want to play some tennis for fun, it's a fascinating sport that comes with a lot of health benefits. Let's take a look at the history of tennis, the benefits of playing it, the challenges you might face, and how you can get help from private coaches and tutors.

Where did tennis originally come from?

Tennis is technically a French invention but modern tennis was pioneered by the British. The story of tennis begins in the 12th century with an outdoor sport that gradually moved indoors to avoid the elements.

Racquets weren't involved until the 16th century. By this time, tennis was played exclusively indoors and players were allowed to hit the ball off the walls of the indoor courts.

With the invention of the lawnmower in Britain, a lot of sports became popular and were ultimately codified. Sports like tennis, lawn bowls, football, rugby, and cricket owe their popularity to the fact that lawnmowers made their playing surfaces viable and maintainable.

The first-ever tennis club was in Leamington Spa where the very first annual modern tennis tournament would be held. This tournament predates Wimbledon by three years!

What are the basic rules of tennis?

The main objective of tennis is for a player to hit a ball over a net into a certain part of their opponent's side of the court without their opponent being able to return the ball in a single hit.

The player starting this sequence is known as the server and the other player is the receiver though these roles will change throughout the match. If the receiver manages to return the server's shot, a sequence known as a rally begins.

Of course, there are more rules to tennis than this, but both players are trying to hit the ball so that it lands in their opponent's end of the court in such a way that it cannot be returned or that their opponent cannot reach it before it lands a second time.

In tennis, you can play with two or four players. Singles tennis is with two players; a player on either side of the net. In doubles, there are two players on each side of the net and they form a team together. In both types, each side can only hit the ball once to return it so even in doubles, the players cannot pass the ball to one another as it were.

The areas where the ball can be hit are indicated by the lines on the court with the baseline at the back, of course, two sidelines (one for singles games and another for doubles games), the service line, and the centre service line. Sometimes there is a line under the net, but this isn't always necessary as the net acts as the boundary.

How to Keep Score in Tennis?

Tennis is unique in terms of how the score is counted. Rather than count from zero to four, players are said to be on love, 15, 30, or 40 during a game.

If both players reach 40, it's called deuce. To win a game from deuce, the player must win by a margin of two. After a player scores a point during deuce, they're said to have advantage. Scoring a point with advantage will result in them winning the game. If the other player scores a point, the advantage is lost and the score returns to deuce.

A set is a sequence of several games. Similar to scoring points in a game, a player has to win a certain number of games by a margin of two to win the set. To win the match, a player has to win a certain number of sets. Usually, this is the best-of-three or best-of-five sets.

What are the advantages of playing tennis?

Like many sports and games, tennis can be great for your overall health. Whether you play singles or doubles, playing tennis can improve your aerobic capacity, lower your resting heart rate and blood pressure, increase your metabolic function, and burn fat.

Similarly, the technical side of tennis is great for toning muscle, increasing strength, making you more flexible, and improving your reaction times. By working on your service, forehand, backhand, stance, and positioning, you'll be able to work on all of these.

Are there any risks in playing tennis?

Tennis, like almost any other physical game or sport, comes with inherent risks. While there's a reduced risk of injury since this is a non-contact sport, the intensity of the games themselves comes with risks. As you run around the court chasing balls, you can put your muscles and joints under a lot of strain, especially during tournaments and competitive matches.

Before you take to the court and play your first game, it's a good idea to get in touch with a doctor or medical professional if you have any concerns about whether tennis is the right sport for you.
