Learn to play tennis with the help of a Superprof coach

The Palm Game, Now with Rackets

Historians trace the origins of tennis to about the 12th Century when French king Louis X was always up for a round of 'jeu de paumes', an indoor activity that consisted of swatting a ball with the palm of one's hand so that it flies over a net, strung across the court, which the opponent must strive to return.

Needless to say, not many opponents forced the king to accept a loss.

Eventually, rackets were introduced, which made hitting the ball much easier and, no doubt, less painful for the players' hands.

Even the game's name, tennis, derives from the French word 'tenez' (pronounced tuh-nay), which means 'hold' or 'receive'. In the early days of the game, the server had to shout 'tenez!' as they served the ball.

The game, as it is played today, is only about 200 years old, and we can thank the inventor of the lawn mower for tennis' evolution to being an outdoor game, as well as for the rules we play by.

Millions of people around the world play tennis and even more enjoy watching the game, in person and on the telly - especially the four main Grand Slam tournaments. The Majors, as they're called, are played yearly in Australia, France, the US and, of course, the greatest of them all, Wimbledon.

Good Reasons to Learn Tennis in Leicester

Leicester is a pleasant town but we could hardly call it a megalopolis. The urban area comprises just 87 square miles, which makes it all the more remarkable that the city boasts no fewer than 53 tennis clubs and a further 11 parks with tennis facilities.

That doesn't mean that everyone who lives in and around Leicestershire is mad for tennis; they're more renowned for their rugby and football clubs than practically any other sport.

So why should such a footie-mad population learn how to play tennis?

First, a relatively small slice of the population plays football. They are usually male, fit and on the youngish side. By contrast, tennis is democratic. Players can be just big enough to swing a racket or old enough to collect their pensions. The sport is open to everyone, regardless of their gender.

Football is more of a spectator sport; more people watch matches than play them. Tennis has its share of spectators, too, but a greater number of people play than watch tennis. Let the health implications of that sink in.

Finally, think of all the tennis facilities in and around the city.

Whether you are a novice or experienced player, prefer playing singles to doubles or vice versa or only want to get your game on indoors, Leicester has a court for you. And you won't even need a team of players to blend into, as footballers do.

Where can You Learn to Play Tennis in Leicester?

Without a doubt, the Leicestershire Tennis and Squash Club is the area's leader in tennis coaching. All of their coaches are Lawn Tennis Association trained and certified, and they offer both adult and junior tennis lessons year-round. Also, they routinely offer tennis camps for Junior players during school holidays.

Their facilities comprise 18 courts with different surfaces, 10 of which are floodlit for playing at night.

GSM Leisure, Westfield Tennis Club, R2R Tennis and David Lloyd Clubs... there is no lack of tennis lessons given by professional coaches in Leicester.

Private Tennis Lessons in Leicester

All of the tennis clubs mentioned above and others in the Leicester area offer group, family and private lessons. You may also choose a private tennis coach; one that fits your schedule and has all of the necessary playing and coaching skills.

When searching for a tennis coach, you should make sure they are LTA certified; that means they know everything about the game and how to teach it.

Credentials aren't absolutely necessary, though. You may find that your Superprof tennis coach has been playing for years and can instruct you on both racket technique and physical safety on and off the court.

For precision, endurance and prestige, you just can't beat tennis. To learn how to play, you just can't beat a Superprof tennis coach.
