When you're young and you think of potential careers you'd like to go into, it is perfectly normal to visualise your ideal goal or endpoint. What do I dream of doing? If it's to be a doctor, it might be saving someone's life in an operating theatre; if it's to be a lawyer, it could be strolling around the courtroom charming a jury of a murder case with more pomp and swagger than Johnnie Cochran. And to be an actor, it might be walking the red carpet at the Oscars before an emotional acceptance speech for Best Actor.

In all cases this is perfectly understandable. It's vital to set yourself targets so you have something to strive for. However, it's important to temper these dream scenarios with a dose of reality if you want to make a living out your job or craft. It's critical to remember that a decision to enter, in this case, the arts as an actor can be a long and tempestuous journey.

Though unpredictable, life as an actor can be exhilarating, and it will be so if you learn to develop a deep appreciation of the craft itself, and the art. If an actor sits waiting for the phone to ring to offer them the starring Hollywood role they've always dreamed of, they are in it for the wrong reasons. Instead, learn to love the creative process. In your own time, read, create, write, devise. This will nurture your ability to love the fibre of what it is we do. Creating art to be experienced, enjoyed and in some cases, learned from by all. If you love being creative, you'll love being an actor, for it is that desire to make things and keep trying that will get you through if that phone isn't ringing.
