Over many years, children and adults of all ages have come to me to start on the cello playing journey. These days when computers, phones and laptops are so much part of our lives, music really can be a wonderful escape.

The reasons for wanting to go on this journey are diverse. For younger children, it is usually a parent or teacher at school who recommends learning an instrument and sadly, other instruments than the cello are more popular generally.

For adults, the reason is usually building up a skill which is useful in retirement. One former pupil wanted to form a quartet with grandchildren and play in the Malvern Priory orchestra. Another is a very competent amateur violinist who really wanted to know what it is like to play the cello. She loves it and is discovering a lot about general string skills which apply to her violin playing too.

I like to practise and learn new things and polish up familiar pieces and find it a good relaxation. It is mindfulness at its best if done well. Sometimes it is better to limit your time so you focus and achieve something ready for the next day when you can take it further.
