I started playing the cello when I was 5 years old because my whole family are musicians. I was very inspired by the sound of the cello so my parents decided that I should become a cellist.

For many years I asked myself, "What is the point of playing the cello? It's just a piece of wood with strings that makes a beautiful sound...is that it?"

I soon realised how much I love all kinds of music - especially classical music. Because firstly it is the best way of communicating your emotions and feelings to the audience, by telling a story that composers wrote down. Of course singing is the most natural way of doing it but I am terrible at singing so I realised I had to perfect the cello to make it feel like it is part of me - like my voice - so I am able to express everything through the instrument.

So the aim I guess for everybody is to learn the most efficient way to master the cello and bring it to the level where you don't have to worry about any technical difficulties. This means your mind can concentrate on sharing something with the listener.

It is a very long, painful and tiring journey full of sacrifices but once it is achieved (I think no one can ever achieve perfection) but the closer you get, the better you feel. You also feel like the instrument is part of you. That is where the fun begins. The journey is long but it can be very fun because in the end, like I said at the beginning - it's just a piece of wood with strings that can touch people's hearts like nothing else.
