When my students are feeling nervous about an upcoming audition or performance, I remind them of an important responsibility of the actor - to move their audience. The thing to do is not to feel compelled to 'impress' the auditioner or examiner, but to give them the gift of unveiling whatever facet of human experience the character is grappling with.

All the work that's been done - on vocal production and physical characterisation and understanding and delivering the text - ultimately comes to serve this goal.

Students have told me that this is a very liberating idea because they are able to give themselves over to creating a connection with whoever they are performing to, rather than feeling they have to prove themselves.
