The introduction presents the essay.
Always begin with a topic sentence which states what theme/concept/aspect of the text you will be discussing in the paragraph. Make sure you always have a succinct beginning paragraph in which you give an overview of your response to the question.

Make your points and express your opinion, which is relevant to the text.

Refer directly to the text and insert short, succinct quotes from the text as evidence which backs up your points.

This is where top marks go. Do not describe what the passage is stating in your own words. Instead you must analyse what it all means. If a certain term was used, or if the author wrote in a specific style - why did they choose this style and why is it significant? Remember the audience: who are the intended readers and how does that affect the themes and meanings?

Sum up what you discussed in your essay. What are the wider issues raised by the text which you have discussed? Leave your final concluding point of view.
