Tags: a good read, impress at an interview

When preparing for a secondary school interview, you need to make a good impression. Go armed with a list of books you have read. The school will probably ask you to name two books you have enjoyed reading. Reading among ten or eleven year olds is not so popular now but you must show that you do read.

This is my suggestion. It worked for one of pupils who succeeded getting an academic scholarship as a result of my advice. He was not a fluent reader but I introduced him to the book "Rose Blanche" by Roberto Innocenti. It is basically a picture book so not too taxing a read. It deals with life for a small girl in the Second World War in Germany. I don't let the children read the text at first but let them tell the story through the pictures. This grabs their attention. They need to use the skills of inference and deduction to unravel the story.

Then read the book "The Boy In the Striped Pyjamas" and you have a winning combination of two texts to talk about. "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas " is available as a talking book. The two stories can be compared and will impress the interviewer.
