One of the resources that I have been using during starters of my lessons is Numeracy Ninjas - http://www.numeracyninjas.org/ . I was introduced to this resource during teacher training. It is a five-minute starter designed for consolidation of key skills in KS3 mathematics, including addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, with a further key skills column.

You can download the formative assessment grid and PowerPoint to aid learning. The aim is that every pupil can aim to improve their belt (or score). When well organised it can be conducted fairly quickly.

Pupils also really enjoy it and it helps for a routine of settling straight into the classroom setting.
