Popularity.  There are 150 million native Russians speakers, plus Russian is still spoken in the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. It’s estimated more than 200 million people worldwide speak Russian, which makes it the 8th most widely spoken language in the world.

Russian Mentality.  You probably already know that Russian mentality is different from that in the East or the West. Many Russians see themselves as a “civilisation of its own”. Everything from parenting, family and friendship values, relationships and healthcare to work ethics and political views has its own flavour in Russia. You will find it much easier to quench your thirst to all things Russian if you can speak and understand the Russian language.

Travel.  Russia is a fascinating and exotic country that occupies nearly 1/6th of land surface of the Earth. There is just so much to do! As a tourist with knowledge of Russian, you can feel confident to venture out beyond the package tours to Moscow and St Petersburg. How about travelling to southern Siberia to see the largest freshwater lake on the planet – Lake Baikal? Or take 7 days to travel from Moscow to Vladivostok on the longest train route? Speaking the language will enable you to meet Russian people in cities and villages and make new friends.

Literature and Big Culture.  Many of the world’s greatest literary masterpieces are in Russian. Learn the language to read in original such classic musts as “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoevsky or “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov. Russian cultural heritage is widely known throughout the world and knowing the language helps to fully enjoy and understand it. Russia can boast brilliant composers (such as Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Igor Stravinsky), ballet dancers (Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev) and artists (Ilya Repin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Wassily Kandinsky).

Education, Science, Business.  Business Russian is one of the six official languages of the UN and a major language for scientific publications, business and trade. If you are serious about scientific research in any area, you'd better crack that Russian language!
