Learning an instrument is a great tool to open up a new world no matter your age - especially here in London.

I always wanted to play the saxophone. I don't know why. At an early age I took an interest in music, luckily for me there was an electric organ in the house! When I eventually got a saxophone in my mid teens I'd already been busily practising various other instruments (including clarinet) for years. The saxophone was all I'd hoped it to be. It was the key to my musical progression there after. Playing in the school jazz band allowed me to go on my first trip abroad to Spain and to France with a county youth jazz orchestra. Playing in my local jazz band on a Wednesday night allowed me to further improve my ensemble skills and play with musicians of all ages. The friends in these ensembles were outside of my age group, outside of my 'usual' circle.

London provides great performance and teaching opportunities. I love the idea that learning a musical instrument opens up the world a little bit more. From teaching a student at their house, to them watching their favourite saxophonist gig in town, to them performing in the numerous ensembles available across the city. It can only be a good thing right?

Music is a universal language. I believe one's musical journey can begin at any point of their life and can hugely enrich it. Stress busting, creative, relaxing, challenging - it can be whatever you want it to be.
