I first started playing trumpet when I was 8 years old. I come from a very musical family and it wasn’t expected of me to learn an instrument but my enthusiasm towards music was certainly encouraged. My mum plays the cello and so I investigated the strings family a bit by playing violin for a year in primary school. After being able to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the violin that was enough of a journey into the world of strings for me.

What really interested me was my dad’s trombone playing. I loved that brass sound and used to get to play a small sackbut trombone that my dad had set up in mine and my brother’s bedroom. I took that sackbut trombone to school demonstrating how it worked to all my friends in the class and finished my demonstration with a wonderful rendition of my piece from violin days, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

I liked the trombone but wasn’t keen on copying my dad completely so to me the next logical choice to make would be to play the trumpet and so on my 8th birthday my very first trumpet arrived.

I have practiced the trumpet since I was 8 years old and it has helped me become a professional musician with the great privilege of being able to make music for the enjoyment of myself and audiences around me.

Whether you’re young, old, a beginner or a professional, being able to contribute to making music is an amazing thing.
