Personal Message
I am a freelance musician, composer, teacher and workshop facilitator who enjoys sharing my passion for music with others.
I teach a variety of styles including jazz, funk, world, rock, pop, folk, classical and can adapt to a pupil's needs or tastes.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Alto Saxophone - I teach mostly in a jazz/funk/pop/soul style but am just as comfortable teaching classical sax. I can also teach improvisation in a variety of different styles
Guitar - I specialise in acoustic guitar playing, both finger picking and pick playing. This covers styles such as singer-songwriter/pop, folk, latin, blues etc.
Composition - I have a first class degree in composition from Trinity College of Music specialising in contemporary composition and electronic composition.
Song Writing - I write songs regularly for theatre and have run song writing workshops for The Royal Opera House, Bigfoot Arts Education and Chickenshed theatres.
Tell me about your qualifications.
BMus Music Composition 1st Class Honours - Trinity College of Music, 2005-2009
Alto saxophone Grade 8 Distinction (Trinity College), 2004
I also have a music leadership qualification from The Royal Opera House which I received in 2011
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for over six years and have taught students as young as six up to sixty and beyond. I frequently work with children and adults in music and theatre workshops as well as running community composition workshops and music tech projects with A level students. I regularly gig with various bands including the function band The Groove Giants and have played as far a field as Morocco, Mauritius and Australia.

As a composer and songwriter I write music for theatre and dance and my work has been performed at such venues as The Royal Opera House and The Young Vic Theatre.
I am also a classroom music teacher at a primary school in North London, teaching nursery up to year 6, running composition workshops and singing groups.
Most recently I have run an old peoples' choir at a care home in Bucks as part of a Comic Relief project.
How much do you charge?
£30 per hour
£25 per 45mins

For pupils that require more than 30mins travel time to get to I will have to charge an extra £5.
Where do you teach?
I travel to my pupil's houses round about the Camden area e.g. Belsize Park, Hampstead, Gospel Oak, Kentish Town.. and can travel further afield if needed.
When are you available?
Currently days and evenings between Tuesday-Thursday.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Sax: beginners to advance (up to grade 8 saxophone).
Guitar: beginners to intermediate, preferably those wanting to learn acoustic guitar whether it's pop, rock, folk, blues/latin/jazz
Composition: Any age, any level
Music theory: Up to grade 5
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I leave the decision as to whether to take an exam or not to the student (or parents), although I do encourage it as a way of tracking progress and having a goal to work towards. My preference for examining boards is Trinity as it is very flexible for the student and offers both jazz and standard saxophone grades. I am also very happy to prepare students for ABRSM exams too having had pupils take both the standard and jazz grades.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am happy to tutor composition, song writing and music tech online, either through e-mail correspondence, instant messaging or Skype.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a full member of 'Sound Sense' - the union of community musicians.
Where and with whom did you train?
Whilst at Trinity College of Music I had guitar lessons with Dominic Ashworth and sax lessons with Mark Lockheart.
I studied composition with Errollyn Wallen, Gwyn Pritchard and Ed Jessen.
I studied music technology with Dominic Murcott.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students range from children to adults, some just starting out, others working towards grades 5-8.

I have a high success rate with pupils' examinations with the majority receiving merits and distinctions.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am a very encouraging and patient teacher, I accept that some people simply want to learn an instrument for fun yet am also passionate about drawing out each pupil's individual potential and motivating them to achieve to the best of their abilities.

I'm happy to offer a taster lesson for students at a discount price to see if they think I am the right tutor for them and would gladly offer advice/suggestions over email if needed at no cost.

Please visit The Groove Giants website for recordings of me playing.

I look forward to hearing from you!
