About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching one to one for the past ten years. My pupils have ranged from primary school pupils right through to retired adults, both of whom I have successfully prepared for ABRSM exams, and ensemble playing of all styles.
Between September 2016 and December 2017 I was a resident brass teacher and trombone specialist at the Knights Templar School in Baldock Hertfordshire. I also directed the schools Junior Orchestra for two years.
In July 2013, I undertook and was awarded a Diploma in Instrumental Teaching by the ABRSM.
Since November 2012, I have worked with the Education department of the London Symphony Orchestra on a freelance basis. I have worked on a number of projects with the orchestra, including their 'LSO On Track' scheme, and 'Not(e) Perfect Orchestra'. I have tutored both children from East London, and out of practice adults who wanted to return to playing for fun!
With regard to my own personal background, I have been playing brass instruments since the age of 8. I have studied at top institutions including both the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Amsterdam Conservatory, with some of the worlds leading players and teachers including; Mark Bassey, Eric Crees, Peter Gane, Chris Houlding, John Kenny, Bart van Lier, Jörgen van Rijen, Mike Svoboda, Pierre Volders, Jamie Williams and Simon Wills. I have played alongside leading ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and have performed with the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands, National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain, Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra as well as many others.

Having taken up the trombone rather late in life, I turned to James for help over a year ago. To my delight, he fell, almost immediately into "tutor mode", and began to offer good advice about my handling of the instrument, posture, breathing etc. It was not long before I invited him to become my tutor, and I have not been disappointed.
James has a natural tallent for teaching. He is closely observant of both the physical aspects of playing, and the musical content of the lesson. His criticism is always useful, constructive, and tactfully delivered. He has great patience, and recognises that it is sometimes better to leave a subject and return to it later. However, he also good at making a point without giving offence, and his remarking that "I may have mentioned this before", is a clear indication that his expectation has not been met.
Now a student at the Guildhall, I am pleased that James has agreed to continue our sessions during his vacations. Taught by some of the best, he bring relevant aspects of their teaching to our sessions. Before he left, he provided four handwritten pages of practice routines to ensure I kept at it!
The improvement of my playing and sight-reading has been a source of great satisfaction this year, and I am sure that anyone who is taught by James will similarly enjoy and greatly value the experience.
