About Jenny
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am an experienced musician who has performed with many orchestras, chamber groups and as a soloist. I have been teaching privately since 2000 and have been teaching in schools since 2006 when I graduated from music college. I have taught woodwind instruments in schools for Redbridge Music Service, Hertfordshire Music Service and flute at Radlett Prepartory school and Parmiter's School. I teach advanced flute students, have taken flute clubs and various standards of recorder clubs at Redbridge music school. I've led bands, coached chamber groups and run flute courses.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes. My DBS certificate is up to date and I have level one child Protection training.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Sarah Newbold, Philippa Davies, Ian Clarke and Averil Williams as my flute teachers. I trained in The Alexander Technique at The Alexander Technique School, Queens Park where Ilana Machover is the head of training.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I'm a member of The Association for Teacher and Lecturers.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
A lot of my pupils enjoy playing in bands and orchestras both within their school and elsewhere. Playing with others is a fantastic learning experience as well as great fun. A lot, but not all, take exams. Some pupils have achieved distinction at grades 7 and 8 and then enjoyed playing in bands and orchestras at university. I have had pupils that have gone to study music at university and music college and have become musicians themselves. My pupils enjoy playing music in a lot of different styles and I like to tailor the lessons to suite the needs of the individual.

I am passionate about both music and teaching. I have a friendly approach and give my pupils a lot of support to help them become confident and creative musicians.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My instrument as a performer is the flute and I teach beginners to post grade 8 standard. With advanced pupils I often teach piccolo as well. I also teach the clarinet to grade 5 standard, piano to grade 3 standard, beginner recorder and music theory. Very small children who are too little to be able to play the flute can begin on the fife. I'm additionally a teacher of The Alexander Technique. It's a hands-on method which can improve co-ordination and ease of movement in both adults and children. It's great for performers of any kind as well as people recovering from injuries.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Bachelor of Music degree with honours from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I qualified to teach the Alexander Technique at The Alexander Technique School, Queens Park. I achieved grade 8 on the piano as well as grade 8 and advanced certificate on the flute when I was a teenager.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 an hour. £20 for a 30 min lesson.
- Where do you teach?
In my house in St. Albans where I have teaching resources and a piano.
- When are you available?
Contact me to find out when I currently have time available.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have taught beginners of six years old, teenagers who are post grade 8 standard as well as adult amateurs. I especially enjoying teaching children and teenagers, whether they are total beginners or advanced players.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
A lot but not all of my pupils take ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exams. I also help pupils prepare for auditions, festivals, competitions and music scholarships. I help many pupils with planning and preparing for GSCE and A' level music performances.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Studies show that learning to play a musical instrument can increase academic success, build self-esteem and co-ordination and help develop social skills. But let the reason for learning be for the fun of engaging in the life enhancing experience of music. Music can paint pictures, tell stories and express emotion. Music is a really important part of my life. I love sharing it with others through teaching. Whatever your age, standard or musical ambition, I can help you develop as a musician and enjoy the endless possibilities of musical communication and understanding.

Jenny is a professional and caring teacher. My daughter has made great progress with her and really enjoys her flute lessons, falling back in love with her instrument under Jenny's guidance.
My daughter started the flute with Jenny a year ago and has made a flying start and now makes a lovely sound and is playing some beautiful melodies. Jenny is patient and reassuring and Olivia has always looked forward to her lessons. We would recommend her most warmly. As a person, Jenny is also very kind and flexible in her approach.
Jenny has taught my daughter, who is now 10, for nearly 2 years. My daughter really enjoys her lessons and has progressed quickly. You will be lucky if Jenny has a space to teach you/your child as she is a lovely energetic person and a great teacher.
My nine year old daughter Grace has been learning the flute with Jenny for about a year. Even after just a few lessons she was able to play a tune and read sheet music. Her approach is very calm and Grace looks forward to her lesson every week. I would highly recommend Jenny to anyone.
