Personal Message
As a patient and encouraging teacher, I warmly welcome all enquiries and look forward to nurturing your love of music, languages and/or yoga. Do feel free to browse through my information and contact me if you have any further queries.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach principally non-classical/ jazz /musical theatre voice and jazz/non-classical piano, jazz harmony/theory, improvising, composition and songwriting, specialising in working with beginners, or people who have been taught classical and want to move over to jazz, but don't know where to start. I also teach classical piano on special request, (having originally trained as a classical pianist), and even here I like to include some improvisation in order to develop the all-round, creative musician. I can also offer recorder tuition, ukulele tuition for beginners (tenor, baritone or bass ukulele), help pupils wanting to take theory exams, and am happy to offer support for those who have opted to take music GCSEs or A levels.

DRU YOGA - I am a fully qualified teacher of Dru Yoga currently running a small private class in Ellesmere on Tuesdays, 2-3.30pm and an open class at Penley Rainbow Centre on Tuesday evenings from 7-8.30pm. I am also available to teach one-to-one, and am happy to run a private one-day Dru Yoga and meditation day on request. Please contact me for more details.

Additionally, I can teach modern languages, for holiday purposes, for GCSEs or just for fun.
Tell me about your qualifications.
Music:
I have
an MA in music, (University of Wales, Aberystwyth),
an MEd (University of Wales, Cardiff)
a DipLCM (Popular Vocals). In addition, I have undergone professional training at the Orff Institute, Mozarteum, Austria (Creative Music Making in the Classroom) and Trinity College of Music, London, Jazz Faculty (Jazz Piano, Voice & Composition).
Dru Yoga:
I am a fully qualified teacher of Dru Yoga (Dip DYT) and a member of the Dru Professional Network.
Languages:
a BA in modern languages (University of Wales, Cardiff),
a Certificate in TEFL
I acquired Japanese Language knowledge while living and working in Japan as an English teacher and was project manager for 3 years for the former Welsh Office"Japanese in Schools" project (see below under experience)
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching piano & theory, since 1985, and jazz piano/voice since 1998. I also regularly run voice workshops, both in the UK and in Greece. I've run music workshops for a great variety of groups - children (able bodied and also severely disabled), adults, people with self-confidence issues, mental health issues (for HertsMIND network) and plenty of sing-for-fun workshops. I am a composer and author, and have written plenty of educational music: songs for children around keystage 2, accessible choir songs for schools/voice workshops/community choirs, modern recorder repertoire, piano music, as well as material for people who think they can't, or shouldn't sing.
As a linguist, I worked as a translator and tutor in the 1980s. I was Project Manager for a Welsh Assembly (former Welsh Office) funded Japanese-in-Schools project in Wales from 1990-1994, where I developed courses and teaching materials, monitored teachers, moderated tests and recruited teachers from Japan. Following this I worked at the International Baccalaureate and then UCLES (now OCR), managing modern languages exams and examiners, and finally as a scrutiny officer at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. Hence I have had extensive experience in languages from tutoring to managing examinations, through to scrutinising awarding bodies. I am half German and was brought up bilingually, and went to school in the UK and Germany. I have studied, lived and worked in Italy and Japan.
With respect to yoga - I have been practising various forms since the 1970s. The form I practise mostly, and teach now is the beautiful flowing form of Dru Yoga.
How much do you charge?
My fees from January 2017 are as follows:
PIANO, SINGING & LANGUAGES
£16 per 30 mins (usually for children under the age of 12)
£26 per 45 mins (£23 over 65s & unemployed concessions)
£31 per 1 hour (£28 concessions)
£47 per 90 mins (£44 concessions
In certain circumstances, I MAY be prepared to teach at pupils' homes within around a 5-mile radius, but only if my schedule permits. In this case, please add £5 travel supplement to the above fees.
Pupils will be able to book a taster session for one-off payment for the lesson. From that point on, fees are usually paid in advance on a month-by-month basis, once we have agreed lesson dates for the month.

DRU YOGA: on an individual bases, fees are the same as above.
Yoga Class is £8 per session (£6 concessions)
Where do you teach?
Ellesmere, Shropshire,in my own music room.
Lessons take place on a Challen baby grand piano and/or a Yamaha Piaggero NP V 80 keyboard. Singers can work acoustically, with a Shure microphone and - for piano/singers, can learn how to use a head mic.

Tuesday afternoon Dru Yoga: currently a private group in Ellesmere. Tues evening class: at Penley Rainbow Centre.
When are you available?
Piano/voice/language teaching days currently Mondays to Fridays, afternoons and some evenings.
Dru Yoga class currently Tues evening 7-8.30, except the second Tuesday of the month.

If I am around during holidays and pupils would like lessons I tend to continue the lessons through holidays and half terms.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
From age 6 or 7 upwards (very occasionally 5, but this depends on the child's physical and musical readiness). With small children who are not quite ready for the piano, we can work on singing and general musicianship until they are ready, in order to allow them musical expression when they are already showing enthusiasm for music. There's no upper limit. Very happy to take on beginners at all ages, or more experienced musicians.
For languages, I'm happy to take on very young children, and there is no upper age limit, currently beginners to GCSE, or beginners who would like to learn a language for holidays or for fun.
For Dru Yoga - adults(16 to 80 (or beyond!)

Tell me about some of your current students.
2017 has been an excellent year for music students. 8 Candidates, of which 6 achieved Distinctions, and 2 achieved very respectable passes. The average mark this year was 83%. It's been a privilege to teach them, but also to enjoy seeing the progress of those not taking exams, and playing purely for their own pleasure. Students are only entered into exams if they really want to have a go (hence the relatively small numbers), and never if they don't fancy it.

I have one student of Japanese language currently. She is currently learning Hiragana, some simple grammar and vocabulary, appears to be enjoying it and is certainly coping very well.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Music is a gift.
Every note we play or sing with care, attention and enjoyment is a gift to our listeners.
Next time you worry about a performance, or an exam, consider how you can lift a person's day through your music.
Remember, examiners HAVE to sit through all these exam performances. With the right intention, you can use your performance to make the examiner's day, to make him or her glad to have come to the exam session.
Likewise, before a performance, think about the stressful day that your audience might have had. How can you use your music and your performance to relax your audience members, and make them glad they came out to hear you? When you practise your music, practise it as though you are creating a wonderful Christmas gift to someone you care about.
Above all - enjoy your music making and practice - let it also be your gift to yourself!
