As an actor and having completed a CELTA qualification in teaching English, grade B (top 25%) which I can apply to all teaching, I feel I can relate to learners well and make lessons fun, and engaging.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
English as a foreign language, and Spanish to all levels including preparation for exams.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a graduate of Colegio delibes with the grade 'sobresaliente' (equivalent A grade) in Advanced Spanish, a graduate of Psychology from the University of Sheffield, and recently a graduate the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in professional acting. I also graduated from Westminster Kingsway college in 2011 having completed a CELTA course in teaching English language to learners who do not have English as their first language.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 per hour, or £75 for two.
- Where do you teach?
I teach in my home in Streatham. I have a vast library of langauge books, and often find that learning is facilitated by a different atmosphere to the student's home.
- When are you available?
I am very flexible and timetabling can be discussed.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Regarding the Spanish and English, I teach from complete beginners to higher intermediate. Whether it be for those who want to learn the language, or those who need help with the academic side. I very much like teaching people who are complete beginners, as I remember what an inspiration my teachers were when I was learning at the very start, and believe I can give a good foundation. I also teach drama school preparation (auditions for getting into drama school), having taught it at drama school.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students learning Spanish for anything below, and up to and including A - level.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Every student is different, and every student learns differently. This is why I love teaching privately - I like to keep communication lines open with regards to whether a student is feeling out of their depth or the class is too easy. Language learning should be fun to learn, without the need for lots of grammar drills that we get so often in the British education system. At the end of the lesson I want you to be confident in what you've just learnt, and not scared of what you don't know! If you are from a Spanish speaking country, and want to learn English, I am perfect for you as I can explain complicated rules in Spanish to ease clarity (equally my Italian and French knowledge can help here, too). With regards to the acting, seeing how someone can do a speech is such an exciting opportunity - I love to give direction based on my experience from drama school and help people get one of those elusive drama school places.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Alex has been teaching Spanish to our family for a while now. We range from an excitable 6 year old, to a GSCE Spanish student to myself who is nearer 50 than 40 and did not know 1 word of Spanish until recently. Alex's teaching style is adaptable to all of us; he interacts extremely well and makes the lessons fun and interesting. His enthusiasm for the Language is infectious and we cannot wait to go to Spain to practise our new skills further.”
(Joe - D grade to A grade achieved)“I thought Alex was a really great Spanish teacher. He was very creative with his lessons. I found his theatrical background extremely useful as he taught in a theatrical manner. He worked out that I was a visual person when it came to learning so he conducted games that had visual material. I found his lessons fun and extremely uplifting. I feel I got a good basis of the Spanish language before moving to Argentina.”
Alex has an excellent knowledge of Spanish grammar and intonation. Spanish is his second language and he shares his learning hints and tips with me which I find really helpful.”
“Alex has really helped me to build my confidence with speaking. He is always very positive and patient. He is knowledgeable about vocabulary and grammar and working with him I have improved my accuracy. His lessons are always enjoyable.”
(C grade to B grade achieved)“I have Spanish lessons with Alex at home. At first I thought it would be like school lessons and boring, but after my first lesson I realised he made the lessons fun and interesting. I now look forward to his lessons!”
“I enjoy being taught Spanish by Alex in the comfort of my own home, in a relaxed, fun and friendly way. I am able to learn at my own pace. Alex is always supportive and will recap on previous lessons to keep things fresh in my mind. He is always on time for my lessons, enthusiastic and polite.”
“It's an absolute pleasure to work with Alex. He is always very caring and understanding when it comes to learning Received Pronunciation. He is at his utmost professional self but also fun. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to have a better grasp of the English language or learn English altogether. He seemed to know a lot about my culture, which is a big surprise as not many people do! I am so glad to have him as my teacher.”
