About Hannah

- What kind of experience do you have?

I graduated with a BSc(Hons) Biology from the University of St Andrews in 2009, where I was awarded a First in my research project on the neuromuscular disorder Parkinson's disease. I then qualified as a Bowen Therapy practitioner, before completing my international teaching degree at the University of Sheffield.

In 2009 I began working full time as a private tutor; and have since taught over 250 students, both from the UK and abroad.

Upon moving to France from 2010 until 2012 I continued to build my tuition business by teaching UK students online. As well as this, I also taught in the French private sector, including teaching at the prestigious Epitech (Ecole pour l'informatique et les nouvelles technologies, also called European Institute of Technology).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have a range of students on a local, national and international scale.

Students have tuition for a variety of reasons:
- to supplement their school work
- to improve their grade in a resit exam
- if they are studying outside of conventional education e.g. distance learning
- mature students wanting a change of career

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Online tuition works almost exactly the same as an ordinary tuition lesson; the only difference is we talk on Skype video phone instead. All lesson notes, questions and mark schemes are the same whether the lesson is online or not, and the lesson format is no different. Students are able to write exam answers in the Skype text window so we can read the answer together before going through the mark-scheme. The edit button on Skype allows students to make any necessary changes to their answers. Skype allows hands-free communication, so students can type or read while talking, and the webcam enables improved communication.

Online lessons are more efficient than conventional home lessons, with no travel expenses or time wasted through travel. Lessons also have a greater degree of flexibility enabling many students to continue with tuition whilst abroad during school holidays or away at boarding school.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I like to tailor each tutoring session to meet the individual needs of the client; whether that means spending an hour improving understanding of a particular topic, going through practice questions or devising a revision plan to help with exams. I appreciate that everyone learns in different ways and have found that 1:1 tuition and a fresh perspective can help unblock troublesome topics and lead to an improvement in grades as well as self-confidence in the classroom.
