Personal Message
I am a fully qualified Biology teacher with several years experience teaching A level Biology. Please read the feedback below from my most recent tutees. I am a full time tutor and thus able to dedicate 100% of my time and energy to tutoring you.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Biology.
Tell me about your qualifications.
BSc in Biological Sciences, PGCE Science, MA Linguistics
What kind of experience do you have?
Read Meg's testimonial: Before Emily started tutoring me I had a C grade in biology from AS through gaining D,E, A in my exams. This year after Emily's tutoring for 6 months I got AAB in my A2 exams, getting a B in human biology A level overall. (My teacher repeatedly refused to predict me higher than a C for UCAS but I needed a B for my midwifery university requirements). I definitely wasn't expecting to achieve this result and couldn't have done it without Emily's help. She's very thorough and organised in her way of teaching and was very patient when there was something I was stuck on. Emily went above and beyond what I expected from a tutor - having had previous biology tutors I was pleasantly surprised with the difference in my understanding. Thank you so much Emily for all of your help. I would 100% recommend her to anyone struggling with biology including friends and family.

Until recently I taught full-time at a top-rated sixth form college where my most recent formally-observed lesson was awarded grade 1 (Outstanding). Many students seeking tutoring are working at a C/D grade and are hoping to get an A or a B. My particular strength is in providing the patience and encouragement to help students like this improve by a grade or two. Students I have tutored have gone from a D at AS to an A at A level. I enjoy tutoring as you have more time than you do as a classroom teacher to get to know the students, and it's rewarding to see their confidence and grades improve over time.

As a full-time tutor, I am in a position to go the extra mile to help my students to succeed by making tailored resources to suit each student's learning style, to email follow-up work to reinforce the topics covered in each session, and to mark past papers as quickly as my tutees give them to me.
How much do you charge?
I find it's best to tutor for 90 mins each week (£60) but I can also do 1 hour (£50). If would like to do tutoring with a friend/friends who are working at a similar level to you, group discounts can be arranged.
Where do you teach?
I am happy to tutor online, or face-to-face in the Discovery Centre in Winchester.
When are you available?
I'm available most of the time - please get in touch and we can find a mutually convenient time to meet each week.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
A level Biology, IB Biology, Pre U Biology
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
A level Biology, IB Biology, Pre U Biology
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes - until recently I worked full time at the local sixth form college
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Online, I use an HD webcam, a graphics tablet and a web-conferencing program where both parties can see and annotate notes and past papers. These sessions can be recorded and shared with the student, so they can be reviewed and used for revision.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Many of my tutees come to me feeling insecure about their ability in Biology, often following poor grades in college tests or internal examinations. My goal is to build their confidence in the subject by using my whiteboard/games/animations/pictures/props to give them good explanations of the relevant concepts, followed by plenty of time for them to use the content or skills they have learnt until they are confident. After a full explanation/demonstration using props and the opportunity to practice, I go through relevant past paper questions and try to coach my tutees to understand what the question is really asking about and how to phrase the answer in order to get full credit. I always follow up on sessions by emailing my students relevant notes/powerpoints for further consolidation, and am happy to do as much marking of past papers as they want to give me!

Please read the texts they sent me on results-day 2017 below:
Charlotte: "I got AAB which is what I need to get into Sussex!! Very very happy - I got a B in Biology!!!! Thank you for all the help, I couldn't have done it without you!!"

Meg: "Hi Emily, just wanted to let you know I got A*AB so I'm very happy. Thank you so, so much! I'm so surprised and very pleased. I got into my first choice - I needed AAB - thank you so much, I couldn't have done it without you!"

Pinky: "I got a B! I'm so happy with that - I've never had a B in any test in class ever, I was predicted C/D. Honestly, thank you so much, I am so so so so happy with that. Overall I got BBB so I've been really over the moon!! Thank you so much for all of your help, it honestly made things so much easier for me!!"

Pinky's testimonial: Emily was my tutor for A level biology in the weeks running up to my exams. I went to her with D grades and struggled with the content load of the course. We met weekly for an hour and the sessions included hands on tasks and interaction which helped me with memory of these specifics in great detail. After the session I would get practice past paper questions to look at and take away with me which would test my overall understanding and capability of the content we had just covered. Towards my exam date we focused on multiple topics in one session, jumping from each just to cover those final parts which I felt I was less knowledgeable in. Results day proved just how much Emily helped when I went from a predicted C/D and a D at AS level to a safe B grade which I was delighted with. I would definitely recommend Emily as a tutor to anyone in a level biology who wants to work hard in this course and get the best possible grade they are capable of achieving!

Paige: "Hi Emily! I ended up with ABB and a B in Biology!!!!! I'm over the moon! So happy, I never thought I could pass it, my teacher said I'd be lucky to get an E so I can't thank you enough for everything you've done for me and giving me the kick up the bum that I needed to motivate me! My Dad cried when I told him haha - my parents are really grateful for what you've done for/with me!"

Paige's testimonial: When I first met with Emily in March I was on the verge of leaving college and was struggling with Human Biology a lot, my Biology teacher at college told me I’d be lucky to pass. With resitting AS, Emily had a lot to cover with me but through meeting a couple times a week we managed to cover everything in much detail which I was very grateful for as I could not have achieved this alone. Emily was the kick up the bum I needed and even provided me with a study plan which was so helpful for my personal revision. I always felt like Emily was always on hand if I was struggling with work at home, only an email or a WhatsApp away and she would be there to help! Emily also provided me with all of the resources I would need for learning and then later revision on my own, she made me feel like I was getting somewhere and that I wanted to come out with the best grade I could achieve. When I received a B on results day I felt so thankful for Emily for being so supportive and motivational as well as putting in so much hard work to help me. I honestly believe that without Emily, I would have struggled to pass!
Some tutoring sessions can feel like a chore but it didn’t feel like that with Emily. Of course it was a lot of hard work and required a lot of effort but now I think back and I always looked forward to my sessions with Emily as I felt as if I was gaining vital knowledge and learning as Emily suited the sessions to my way of understanding.
I would recommend Emily 100% and I will always be thankful to her for everything she did for me!
