About Calum

I graduated LAMDA in July 2012 and have been preparing students for the Drama School audition circuit ever since. Some of my previous students have accepted places at RADA, LAMDA etc.

I continue to work as a professional actor; last year I was in the West End/BBC production of HAMLET (with Andrew Scott) and MARY STUART (with Juliet Stevenson). I've also performed with the RSC, National Theatre, NTScotland, Bath Theatre Royal, Birmingham REP, Manchester Royal Exchange and around the world in China and Russia. In 2016 I took the title role in a $12M IMAX movie that filmed in the Amazon Rainforest - it's currently being shown in IMAX cinemas all over the USA.

Find out more about Calum

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started by joining my local youth theatre, Playbox Theatre, when I was 12 years old. I was incredibly lucky that, alongside acting classes, I was offered the opportunity to perform in shows with them - eventually I was offered a part as a child actor at the Royal Shakespeare Company. I loved it and haven't looked back!
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

Mark Rylance, Andrew Scott, Ria Zmitrowicz. Beyond the world of actors I like the visual art of Louise Bourgeois and the music of Laura Marling.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

A strong work ethic and flexibility. It's imperative that you prepare diligently but are flexible enough to be affected by offers made by other actors and directors.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Creativity isn't something that you can bottle and use on demand. If you're not feeling creative it's important to give yourself space to let yourself daydream - that might mean going for a long walk, practising yoga or even knitting. When you're ready, return to your project and remember that there's no rush to finish it.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

It's my belief that it has never been more important to understand how to communicate: to express your thoughts clearly and articulately; to speak with confidence and fluency; and to effectively modulate your voice in a way that reflects your intention. I've seen, first hand, the transformative effect of LAMDA Exams and Acting Classes on young people.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

In 2017 I performed in HAMLET in the West End alongside one of my favourite actors, Andrew Scott, and with a director I had admired since I was at drama school, Rob Icke. It was a real highlight of my career and I learned a huge amount.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I had a wonderful surprise earlier this year when a pupil I had been teaching for 4 years achieved a 97/100 in her Grade 8 LAMDA Examination. I wasn't surprised at her success but I was surprised, looking back at how her grades had steadily improved over the years, at how far she had come.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

There's no secret! I try to listen be guided by the thoughts and ideas of the person in front of me.
