I teach bassoon, clarinet, recorder and music theory
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a B Mus (Hons) from Royal Holloway College, University of London and a PGCE from Reading University. I have an LTCL (Trinity College, London) in bassoon teaching and ABRSM Grade 8 clarinet (distinction)
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught instrumental lessons for 30 years and have also been a specialist primary music teacher in Essex schools for 25 years, teaching whole class music and recorder lessons, conducting music festivals and organising school choirs and orchestras. I am Principal Bassoonist with Essex Symphony Orchestra and play with the Danzi Wind Quintet. I am Bassoon Tutor for Essex Youth Orchestra and Essex Young People's Orchestra.
How much do you charge?
£17 for 30 minutes, £34 for an hour. First lesson free!
Where do you teach?
I am currently the woodwind tutor at Elm Green Preparatory School in Little Baddow, St Anne's Preparatory School in Chelmsford, Westcliff High School for Girls, Westcliff High School for Boys and Southend High School for Girls. In the evenings I teach at home in Wickford, Essex which is within easy distance of Chelmsford, Brentwood, Shenfield, Billericay, Basildon, Southend and Rayleigh.
When are you available?
I teach on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at home in Wickford during term time. Lessons can be arranged during the school holidays at any time.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Any age, from beginners to advanced
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exams
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Where and with whom did you train?
Vernon Elliott at Trinity College of Music, London
Tell me about some of your current students.
I have pupils as young as 5 learning descant recorder (an excellent introduction to all woodwind instruments, as well as an instrument in its own right) and pupils aged 8 to adult learning bassoon (and mini and short reach bassoons) clarinet, descant, treble, tenor and bass recorder and music theory. I have helped students to audition successfully for music scholarships at Newhall and Felsted and for the Essex Youth Orchestras. I also teach pupils in preparation for their GCSE and AS/A2 solo performances and perform with them in duets for their ensemble performances. Almost all of my younger pupils work towards ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exams but many adult pupils choose not to. I am happy for lessons to follow either path.
