Personal Message
I am a professional cellist with over 30 years experience as a performer, teacher and mentor. I am based near Ely in Cambridgeshire. I am passionate about teaching and thrive on the successes of my students.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach cello to students of all abilities and backgrounds.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have both a Post Graduate and Graduate Diploma in Advanced Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
What kind of experience do you have?
With over 30 years experience, I have taught for many years as a peripatetic teacher within schools and specialist music schools such as Blackburn School of Music, Barking & Dagenham Music Service, Kent Music School and Kensington & Chelsea College, as well as directing Youth Orchestras and chamber music coaching. During my final year at the Royal Northern College of Music, I was asked to contribute to the formation of its String Teachers Course. Do check out my personal website which will tell you more about my performing experience as a West End performer and orchestral player.
How much do you charge?
I charge £35 per hour. But I tend to discuss this during initial contact as the length of a lesson depends entirely on the standard and age of the student. For new students I like to offer a free consultation lesson, at which we can discuss aims, goals etc.
Where do you teach?
Currently I teach at Berkshire Maestros Music School and Dartford Music School ( The Mick Jagger Centre ) as a cello specialist, as well as my own private practice in Ely.
When are you available?
I teach at a mutually agreed time, mainly evenings and weekends.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and abilities, so please do get in touch to discuss how I can help. I enjoy teaching adults and very happy to guide adult beginners and tailor lessons to suit.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I teach the ABRSM syllabus. However, I appreciate that not all students want or are interested in taking formal exams, so I am very happy to help those who just enjoy playing and seek improvement. I have many years of experience of entering students for ABRSM exams, with an excellent success rate.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Musicians Union, and The European String Teachers Association (ESTA)
Where and with whom did you train?
From the age of 14 I studied with Paul Ives (BBC Symphony) at the Shropshire School of Music, and then at the Royal Northern College of Music I was lucky enough to study with eminent cellists Marius May (soloist), Antonio Lysy (soloist) and Eduardo Vassallo (CBSO). Whilst at the RNCM I also took part in masterclasses with Bruno Shrecker, Steven Isserlis and Leonid Gorokhov.
