Personal Message
Hi! I'm a professional chess coach with a strong academic background across a range of subjects. I have many years of experience of working with students of all ages and take a great deal of pride in ensuring all my students meet their potential.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Primarily I am a chess coach, but I'm also an experienced academic tutor at various subjects. My particular strengths are English, writing, and 7/11+ exam prep. There are many subjects that I teach that I haven't listed on my profile, so feel free to send an enquiry.

I also teach computer and IT skills if you are looking to keep up with the grandkids and get to grips with some of the latest technology!
Tell me about your qualifications.
I'm an internationally rated chess player, and full time chess coach. My A-Levels were in English Language, Biology and Classics.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have 20 years experience as a chess coach (35 years as a player!) and over 10 years of teaching chess in schools, as well as a huge number of one-to-one lessons. I normally see rapid progress from students that are able to complement their private lessons with independent study and practice.
How much do you charge?
I charge £60 for professional chess coaching for a session of at least an hour, but I am very flexible with time and if sessions naturally extend then of course there's no additional charge. Academic tutoring is slightly cheaper and my fees are all inclusive, they cover travel costs/time as well as lesson preparation. Depending on location I can usually offer slightly reduced rates in school half-term or main holidays when my schedule is a little bit quieter.

If you would like to take a slightly longer session than one hour, please contact me for a price.
Where do you teach?
Although I reside in South London I am often based in Central London so wherever you are, feel free to send me a message and see if we can work something out.
When are you available?
I try to be as accommodating as possible to fit students into a time slot that works best for them. I know that weekday afternoons are particularly in demand but I will try and work with you to find a realistic time. I can also make time at weekends for committed students.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Although it's a cliche, I really have taught students from 8-80, and some outside of that age bracket as well! For chess players I teach anyone of any age up to Master standard. For academic subjects I specialise in primary school children but am happy to accommodate your requirements. If, after you contact me, I think I am not the best fit for you, I will tell you and will never take an assignment just for the sake of it.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I do. I am happy to give the certificate number for you to check it online (permanently up-to-date).
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor online by Skype and for online lessons I can offer a 20% discount on all listed fees. Under 18s must have an adult present at their side.
