About Aidan

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching students of all levels and ages for the past three years. My students come from different musical backgrounds; some are total beginners, some have basic classical training but want to branch out into the jazz realm (and vise versa), some are reaching retirement so want to learn clarinet as a hobby and some are even aspiring professionals.
I am also an experienced group teacher, leading children's workshop in Barton college, Eastleigh with
fellow GS students, discussing life as a musician and demonstrating instrumental techniques.

Volunteering:
Since early 2017 I have had a weekly volunteering post at Riverside School in Haringey, a specialist school for children with learning difficulties. My role as a music teaching assistant has proved to be challenging yet rewarding, as the students I work with have a broad spectrum of conditions so it is very much about getting to know them individually and helping them to make gradual progress from term to term. Some of my duties include piano teaching, helping out with music assemblies and giving demonstrations on using computer programs such as garage band.

As of September 2017, I will be joining the Lewisham music faculty as a peripatetic woodwind tutor which I'm very excited about!

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an enhanced DBS certificate, as of 22/08/17

- Where and with whom did you train?

During my four years at the Guildhall school I studied jazz, classical and composition with some of the finest teachers in the country, including:
-Joy Farrall, principle clarinet with Britten Sinfonia
-Julian Farrell, former principle with Academy of Saint Martin In The Fields
-Ian Clark, "a true master of his art” – British Flute Society
-Christian Forshaw, leading saxophone virtuoso
-Gareth Lockrane,"Flute phenomenon!...”Jack Massarick, London Evening Standard
-Martin Speake, top British jazz alto sax player
-Paul Whitmarsh, professor of composition GSMD

Whilst a music/french student at Leeds University, I took classical clarinet lessons with Liz Jordan and composition with Mic Spencer.
In preparation for my guildhall auditions I studied with Shabaka Hutchings, former BBC new generation artist and frontman with Sons of Kemet, Shabaka and the Ancestors and the Comet is Coming.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My lessons will be fun, highly engaging and tailored around your own areas of interests. I can guide you through the fundamentals of clarinet/ alto sax playing so you develop a strong foundation on your instrument; I can show you how to practice improvisation and learn to play in the jazz idiom; I can help you work towards classical graded examinations with ABRSM or trinity college. I come well prepared to the lessons to ensure that my students get the most out of our time together. I believe that variety is the key to making music learning an interesting and fun experience so I endeavor to include a range of activities in my lessons, from duet arrangements to ear training to essential exercises.

My three years peripatetic teaching experience has taught me how to bring out the best in a student and to help them build confidence as a performer so they can fully express themselves through their instrument. My own musical studies began on recorder while at Gayhurst Primary school before switching to trumpet a few years later and finally settling down on the clarinet mid way through Secondary school ( Stoke Newington School). I was heavily involved with big band projects, jazz small groups and classical wind quintets throughout my formative years and began composing while in my late teens.I read Music/ French joint honors at Leeds University for two years, taking modules in classical composition and performance and transferred to Guildhall in 2012 where I studied teaching skills elective over the final two years.

As well as instrumental teaching, I now focus my attention on large scale jazz composition and freelance gigging on the London Scene in variety of musical settings. I have performed professionally as a sideman and as bandleader with the likes of Gary Crosby, Marcus Roberts, Jason Marsalis, Rob Luft and Peter Edwards at prestigious venues such as Kings Place, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Vortex and the Roundhouse.
