Personal Message
Thank you for visiting my profile! I have many years experience teaching, from my days leading my local youth brass band to my current status as a successful private teacher around Manchester. I specialise in adult tuition, but also teach children.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
My focus is on brass tuition, ranging from trumpet all the way down to the tuba. However, I also offer music theory tuition and I am registered to enter students for ABRSM Graded examinations.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied for four years at the Royal Northern College of Music, and specialised in performance achieving a First in my final recital. I also worked intensively in other fields including Advanced Jazz Improvisation, Big Band Musicianship, Chamber Music and Orchestral Musicianship. I have recently been involved with residencies run by Brighter Sound, the first being the FUNK: Foundation working closely with Pee Wee Ellis (James Brown's MD/Tenor Saxophone throughout the '60s) and Gary Winters (Fred Wesley's Trumpet player) and the second being the Jazz Directors Series with jazz pianist/composer Zoe Rahman.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have a lot of experience teaching, starting from the age of 17 in my local youth brass band, then as part of music schools and now as a private tutor in Manchester and it's surrounding areas. I am currently a freelance musician, and play a wide variety of musical genres including pop, funk, musicals, classical, jazz and brass bands.
How much do you charge?
I offer two tariffs; either by the half hour or by the hour. For half an hour of expert tuition, I charge £15 and for an hour of expert tuition, I charge £25.
I am happy to travel up to 10 miles from Manchester city centre, but if you are based further afield travel expenses would have to be discussed. I can also teach in my home in Salford.
Where do you teach?
I can either teach you in the comfort of your own home, whether you're based in Manchester city centre, Salford, Altrincham, Trafford, Stockport or Bury. Also, I offer tuition in my home in Salford (I have a private teaching room), so if you work in and around Salford you could avoid the rush hour traffic and have a brass lesson!
When are you available?
I am totally flexible to your schedule wherever possible, this can be discussed should you choose to contact me.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I specialise in adult tuition, however I do have extensive experience in teaching children from leading my local youth band for many years, including one-to-one and group tuition.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am registered with ABRSM to enter my pupils for graded examinations.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Not presently.
Where and with whom did you train?
Royal Northern College of Music. During my time there, I was taught by the following professors: Adrian Morris (Halle Orchestra), Simon Cowen (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra), Christian Jones (Opera North), Rob Holliday (Freelance), Mark Hampson (Mahler Chamber Orchestra), Jiggs Whigham (Jazz Trombone virtuoso).
Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently, all of my students are adults. I am very proud of the progress they all have made during the time I have taught them. I am about to enter one of my pupils, Nick (a total beginner, both in trombone and musicianship in general), into his Grade 1 in trombone after just a year of tuition. Read his testimonial below:

“This year I started learning to play tenor trombone. It’s been an enriching, fun and truly rewarding experience, and one of the main reasons is due to how brilliant my tutor, Dan Mitchell, is: a great teaching style with the flexibility to tailor his tuition to my style of learning; incredibly knowledgeable and, of course, a very accomplished professional musician. As an actor, I’ve found Dan’s understanding of performance ties in perfectly with my experiences, which really accentuates and enhances the whole learning experience, and which definitely contributes to faster and deeper learning of both the chosen instrument and musical theory.”

Another of my students has recently just passed her Grade One trumpet exam after a year of tuition, and we are now looking into progression to Grade Two/Three.
