About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
Over the last eight years I have taught as a music lecturer in Higher Education (teaching undergraduates and masters level postgraduates at Newcastle University), and as a music tutor in a specialist Further Education music technology college in Bristol (dBs Music) teaching BTec courses. Both positions prioritised practice-led teaching.
I have taught modules such as Studio Recording, Composition, Music Production, Sequencing, Sound Synthesis, Sound For Film, Sound For Games, Aural Skills, Score Writing, Music Theory, and Cultural Theory/History of music.
I am comfortable working with large groups small groups, as well individuals on a one to one basis.
I make music under two pseudonyms, James Joys and Base Cleft, as well as working with singer/songwriter Peter Devlin. I am a classically trained oboe player, and can play piano. However my background and interest lies in experimental musics, and this impulse to explore and play is central to the work I make. I am interested in the relationship between phonographic fidelity and acousmatic approaches to composition. I have worked with a wide variety of musicians - instrumentalists, programmers, singers - and find the key to successful work is collaboration. I work at the intersection between recorded and synthesised sound, and have many years of experience working and teaching in professional recording studios as well as smaller home studio set ups. However I always approach technology (electronics, software, instruments, our voices) as a means to an absorbing, interesting musical end.

Hello. I am 32 year old Irish composer and academic living in Belfast. I froth the cleft between electroacoustic music, field recording, post-disco beat making, and found sound, creating music that fuses together the concrète and the kinetic.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach music and English.
The facets of music I teach include aural skills, music theory, composition, and music technology. I am able to teach up to university level in these areas.
I can teach both English literature and language up to A-Level, but am also happy to proofread and help those at undergraduate level who need assistance with essay writing.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold a PhD in music: 'Between The Concrète and The Kinetic: A Portfolio Of Compositions' (2014)
I also hold an Masters in music (Distinction), and a BMus(hons) (First) in music.
These qualifications are all from Newcastle University.
- How much do you charge?
£25 per lesson.
If I need to travel a little further afield there will be surcharge of £6 to cover costs.
- Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at home in Belfast in a comfortable, light room. This is because I have a good set of practical resources at home (instruments, books, stationary etc) that are impractical to cart about. However I am prepared able to travel within a reasonable distance to students' homes. This should be considered to be within Belfast and its surrounding suburbs.
- When are you available?
I am flexible. Weekends are generally reserved for freelance work, but my timetable can be re-arranged according to schedules as they come up.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from 11 upwards.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Key stage 3
