Cathal worked with me on my audition piece for the National Theatre. He made me feel very at ease and took the time to find out what I wanted to portray from my chosen speech. He helped me bring out a real depth in the character and gave me techniques to use in order to really make my performance as intricate as possible.
Cathal also gave me great advice about the audition process as a whole which enabled me to feel fully prepared and confident for my time with the casting director. I know my performance in the audition would not have gone as well had I not had Cathal's help and I would definitely look to him again for tuition in the future.
Cathal prepared me excellently for auditions with drama school and general meetings. He was able to give me an insight into what would suit me best for the different auditions and the people I would be meeting. His encouraging, professional and friendly manner made me feel safe to try out bolder ideas in the rehearsals.
He also has an excellent ability to speak to actors on various levels, readjust the way he presents an idea if it isn't working for you, and above all, I appreciated how collaborative he made the whole process feel. I would not have felt as confident or prepared for my drama school auditions without his help. He is a very friendly, patient, honest and talented director to develop your work with.
Just a brief note to say what a wonderful workshop the girls had today. Cathal was really insightful, inspiring and had an excellent way of working with them. I know they will have taken a lot of useful and relevant approaches to text away with them – it was a resounding success on all fronts and he was a credit to the Donmar.
"Cathal Cleary was brilliant. Incredibly detailed script work to unpack the different mode of utterance in the play
