Personal Message
Hi there, I am a keen, experienced Drum Kit teacher/performer who has taught all ages and abilities. I am currently head of percussion at St Aloysius' College and have toured the UK and Europe with the James Taylor Quartet and Hazel O'Connor.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Drum Kit in a wide range of genres and idioms including Jazz, Rock, Pop, Latin and Reggae. I am also able to play along with students on bass guitar in these styles, to provide a realistic playing situation and to develop rhythm section (drums and bass) skills.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a 1st Class degree in Jazz Performance from the Royal Academy of Music in Marylebone. I also have a teaching qualification which I studied for during my time at the academy. This qualification is the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM).
What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience of teaching beginners as young as 5 years old right up to experienced adults. I have taught Graded courses as well as study of genres including jazz, rock, pop, reggae and Latin styles. I have assisted Pee Wee Ellis (James Brown) on music workshops in schools for key stages 3 and 4. I also have experience with assisting on Notivate workshops (teaching children to improvise) in youth centres and in schools. In addition to this, I have lead workshops at St Marylebone Church of England School on Jazz and the Blues. I teach drum kit at St Aloysius' College in North London. Here I have experience of teaching children from 11 to 18 years old and regularly prepare Key Stage 4 pupils for their GCSE performances.
How much do you charge?
I currently charge £30 per hour for all enquiries made through the tutor pages. For half hour lessons I charge £20.
Where do you teach?
I am based in South East London including Grove Park, Bromley, Lee Green, Sydenham, Brockley, Lewisham, Beckenham, Chislehurst, Sidcup and Catford but I am willing to travel to most places in London to teach, and also in Kent. I have the facilities to teach from my home, where I have a sound proof studio and professional quality drums and audio equipment for playing along to tracks. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss this further.
When are you available?
I am available to teach throughout the year including school holidays and I am quite flexible during the working week. Again, feel free to get in touch to discuss this.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have experience of teaching all ages and abilities. I have taught adult learners and have worked regularly in secondary schools for 4 years. My work in secondary schools includes leading and assisting on workshops and one and one teaching. I have taught at the Junior Academy (the feeder course for the undergraduate program at the Royal Academy of Music) and taught students at undergraduate level. I also have experience of working with primary school aged children in a number of composition workshops and one to one lessons.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare my students for grades 1-8 in the Rockschool and Trinity College London syllabus. I can also provide instrumental help for GCSE and A Level students who need help for their performance courses.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a valid CRB check.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can provide drum lessons via Skype. Please feel free to contact me about this.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During my time there I studied with British Jazz legend Martin France (John Taylor, Gwilym Simcock and Kenny Wheeler) and Jeff Williams (Stan Getz). I also received tuition from Gerard Presencer, Pete Churchill, Nikki Iles, Nick Smart and Tom Cawley.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students include complete beginners and also students who I am helping to take through their GCSE Music program. Some are studying Graded material while others are learning to play music from their favorite bands. Some of my students have learned the instrument aurally and need help learning how to read music while others can already read but need help finding the right influences to take their playing to the next level.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Learning to play an instrument is great fun! Whether you are just starting out or are thinking of of playing professionally/auditioning for college I can provide you with the expertise to achieve your goals.
