Personal Message
I am an enthusiastic and friendly teacher based in the South Bristol area. I aim to provide a fun and positive environment for learning no matter what your ambitions in music are. All ages and standards of pupils are welcome.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am a woodwind teacher and musician with knowledge of flute, piccolo, clarinet and saxophone. I am a flute specialist with DipABRSM qualifications in both teaching and performing. I teach flute at all levels, can offer piccolo coaching if required and I also offer fife lessons for children too small for the flute. I also teach clarinet and alto saxophone up to grade 5.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have recieved a 2:1 BMus degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama where I have advanced my performance and teaching skills through interaction with top professionals. I have spent much time learning about teaching with my flute tutor there and I have included a reference from him in my media section. I have a DipABRSM in Instrumental Teaching (flute) and DipABRSM in Music Performance (flute) from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music as well as A level music (grade A), ABRSM grade 5 theory and LCM grade 5 piano.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience teaching students privately from beginner through to beyond grade 8, ages ranging from 6 to 74. I have also worked as a whole class instrumental teacher with Somerset Music, teaching woodwind instruments to primary school children in a classroom environment. I have previously spent time coaching small ensembles, sectionals and working with Making Music Changing Lives in Ely, Cardiff where I spent time teaching young children about music theory and developing instrumental skills.
How much do you charge?
My fees for lessons at my home studio are £28 for an hour lesson, £21 for 45 minutes or £14 for half an hour.
My fees for lessons in your home are £30 for an hour lesson, £22.50 for 45 minutes or £18 for half an hour.
Where do you teach?
I mainly teach from my home studio in Bridlington, Bristol. I offer some lessons at students' homes in the surrounding areas of Bristol. I currently teach in areas such as Clifton, Redland, Southville, and Knowle.

I also teach in Nailsea Music Shop on Tuesday and Thursday evenings if you are in this area.

I teach in Cardiff on Saturdays and have some spaces available on this day at the moment.
When are you available?
I currently have availability for weekday daytime and evening lessons in my home studio. Please mention any specific availability you have when you contact and I will do my best to find a mutually suitable lesson time. I am often available to teach during the school holidays if that is required. My space for lessons at students' homes is currently very limited.

Lessons in Nailsea Music Shop are currently only available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon/evenings.

Cardiff lessons are currently only available on Saturdays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages of student are welcome, I have had experience with a wide age range of both child and adult students. I teach flute from beginner to post grade 8 and clarinet and saxophone from beginner to grade 5. Fife and recorder lessons are available for younger students. Returning musicians who learnt in the past and would like a teacher to help them reconnect with the instrument are also very welcome.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Students are under no obligation to take exams but do have the option to work towards graded music exams if desired. I prepare my students for ABRSM exams in most cases but can work with a student for Trinity exams as preferred. I can also help to prepare students for school performance exams and auditions.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a full and up to date DBS certificate.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a full member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and a registered private teacher with this organisation.
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied flute with Roger Armstrong and clarinet and saxophone with John Cooper. I have previously studied flute with Nicola Russell, Caroline Hobbs-Smith, clarinet with Laura Porter and have studied piccolo with Barbara Brown. I have also taken part in masterclasses with many top professional flute players such as Matthew Featherstone (Principal flute of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales) and Ken Smith (formerly Principal flute of the Philharmonia Orchestra).
Do you have a personal message for students?
