- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am happy to offer online tutorials via skype depending on the subject/assignment. I can use a variety of software depending on the student's preference and the subject involved, from Google Hangouts to Zoom to Dropbox. This software allows me to share screens with the student and make live changes simultaneously. Whilst initially sceptical, I have found online tutoring to be most effective, particularly for secondary aged children. It can provide a stand-alone solution or supplement my in-person tutorials. Children benefit from the flexibility of online tutoring (I can accommodate last minute session requests this way) and the academic continuity and security of having me as their own easily accessible tutor. I would be pleased to provide a free 30 minute online tutorial for you to test it out!
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Private Tuition ought to be entirely flexible and built around the needs and goals of the student. It subsequently requires a highly individual, bespoke approach. My tutoring style is thus adaptable and tailored to each person. I strive to give each student the best possible advantage in their studies and future life plans.
At the younger end, I aim to create a fun learning environment to bring out the creativity, responsibility and confidence in each child. I believe that confidence and a high self esteem are key to a bright mind and a bright future. At the primary and secondary level, I focus on building up self belief and motivation to allow each student to reach their potential and personal objectives. I enjoy showing young people that learning can be a great adventure and allows us to explore exciting new worlds. I use a variety of methods to make lessons interactive and multi-sensory based on the personality and learning capacity of the child. I break up lessons with word games, flash cards and other visual aids to enhance learning and keep motivation levels high. My approach encourages students to ask 'silly' questions and understand that making mistakes is a key part of the learning process. Regular assessments are carried out to monitor the progress of the student in comparison with their peers and reveal any focus areas.
For more mature students, I also tailor my approach to suit the individual mixing core concepts with more general study skills and encourage each student to find their own way of independent learning. Goals, objectives and desired grades are outlined at the start followed by the creation of a tuition schedule leading towards these achievements. This schedule forms the basis of future tutoring sessions which are broken down into achievable step by step objectives. I encourage students to think outside of the box and enjoy coming up with alternative ways of explaining things which may have been skated over in class/previously. Areas of weakness are identified and worked on throughout the course of tuition with exam technique and essay writing style frequently focussed on.
Whatever your age, level or ability, I would be pleased to hear from you.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
We met Emma last summer when she came on holiday with our family. Emma tutored our three children aged 6, 8 and 10 for two weeks. All three kids very much enjoyed working with her and really looked forward to their sessions. Emma is extremely easy to get along with, yet very disciplined with the kids. We can wholeheartedly recommend her." (Mrs T, mother of three Primary children, France & Switzerland)
“Dear Friends - Many of you have heard me speak about Emma Storey, a British tutor who has been living with us. Some of you who have met her know how bright, gracious and engaging she is. [Our son] has benefitted enormously from Emma's years of experience both as a tutor and manager of a roster of tutors in London. She was expert at shaping his curriculum, ambitious in setting goals but supportive in meeting them; disciplined but also a lot of fun." (Mrs P, mother of 14 year old boy, Hong Kong)
“Emma worked with my 10 year old daughter to support her general studies. She was punctual, polite and able to explain concepts in a way that Vera could easily understand. She would go the extra mile to ensure tasks were done correctly and to the highest of standards. She also had a very positive disposition and was a pleasure to have in our home. She helped boost Vera's confidence no end; I would recommend Emma for her dedication, flexibility and knowledge.” (Mr R, father of 10 year old girl)
“Emma, I can't thank you enough for all the help and motivation you have given Camilla. She has come such a long way in her studies with your support and produced a beautiful piece of work today - totally by herself - which she was so proud of. Thank you also for the kind card and 'magic exam silver coins'! We will be sure to keep you posted on the outcome later in Feb (and hopefully celebrate together!)”
(Mrs O, mother of 10 year old girl, London)“Emma - I just wanted to write to say a huge thank you. You have been faultless throughout this process and I have been so impressed by your efficiency and professionalism over these last months that I am sure our paths will cross again.”
(Mrs R, mother of Primary girl and boy twins, London)Gavin did not once complain about his daily two-hour sessions and I watched her unearth in him both a discipline and freedom with words and written expression (and yes, even an appreciation for grammar) I hadn't expected to see in 3 short months. Her forte is targeting what each student needs. I am always happy to talk to you more about our experience with Emma as we can't recommend her highly enough.”
(Mrs P, mother of 14 year old boy, Hong Kong)“We would like to invite Emma back to Hong Kong to spend a month with us in September for residential tutoring. From our experience last summer, we know that Emma's help with SSAT test prep/extension work in reading and writing will be of enormous help as [our son] takes on this process. I can't tell you how happy I am that we will have another round of Emma in our lives.”
