Personal Message
Hi there. I have been teaching and tutoring students in English and History for sixteen years, helping them to grow in confidence and to achieve their goals in their studies and to discover a passion for learning!
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English and History online from Key Stage 2 up to AS/A2 Level, both as a tutor for extra coaching, and also as a teacher of full courses for Home Educated students.
I also prepare students for Common Entrance and specific school entry exams, as well teaching essay writing; exam technique and troubleshooting for those who need to re-sit exams. In addition, I am a reading specialist for those with Literacy difficulties. I can also support students learning English as a second language and also prepare candidates for IELTS tests. I also provide an assignment setting and marking service for Home Educated students who are self studying. I am also Medieval History specialist and can tailor non exam courses for those wishing to study this subject for fun.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold a B.A Hons degree in English Language and Literature, and also an M.A in Medieval Studies. I have also begun preparatory studies for a PhD in Medieval History.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been tutoring individuals from primary up to adult, and running private classes for sixteen years, and am particularly experienced in working with Home Educated young people (I am a home educating parent myself). I taught A level History for Interhigh Online High School for nearly three years, and have been running my own private classes for home-educated students for many years. I have been an English and History tutor for Wolsey Hall Distance Learning college since 2015. I have also been running Medieval History workshops and speaking to adult groups, schools and Home Education groups for fifteen years.
Recent examples of success in my teaching include a student who passed the entrance exam for Eton and several students who have just gained A* and A's in IGCSE English Language, and others who have achieved their targeted C in Foundation GCSE English Language and also Literature . Other students also gained an A* and a B in IGCSE History. At A level, one of my students has just achieved an A in History, and a full marks A in English Literature. I also recently helped an A level student who improved from a grade E to grade B in their A level History course. An adult student has just gained the rquired level in his IELTS test for emigration to Australia.
How much do you charge?
Primary up to GCSE level/IELTS/Literacy/School Entrance etc = £28 per hour.
For AS level and above = £30 per hour.
For group classes (both face-to-face and online) the fee is £8 per class per student. Group classes are small (no more than nine students).
Where do you teach?
I teach online via Skype and a Virtual classroom.

I am not able to travel, as I don't drive yet, so all lessons will take place online.
When are you available?
I am available to teach between 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday, and occasionally on Sundays. I follow the Welsh school terms, but will teach during the holidays by negotiation, particularly if an exam is approaching.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students from age 7 upwards and from Key Stage 2 up to A2 level. I am also happy to work with adults studying English or History for exams or informally; those wishing to improve their written English or essay writing skills and students preparing for ISEB Common Entrance Exams/IELTS/ESOL exams.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE and IGCSE English and History (all exam boards); AS and A2 level English and History (all exam boards); individual school entry and Common Entrance exams; IELTS.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I do have an up-to-date DBS Certificate.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor online via Skype/Webcam and also use the Electa Virtual Classroom. I am also available by phone and email between lessons. Via Skype and/or Electa, I can provide either one-to-one tuition or small classes (max. nine students).
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Historical Association (for History teachers).
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied English Language and Literature at Birmingham Polytechnic, then trained as a Historian at Royal Holloway, University of London, and at the Tower of London where I was an Historical Interpreter for four years. This involved learning to teach and communicate with people of all ages and walks of life.
Tell me about some of your current students.
At present I run three KS3 History classes for home educated students. I am taking two groups of home educated students through the new Edexcel 9-1 GCSE History course. I also have three classes taking Edexcel 9-1 IGCSE English Spec A. In addition, I am a tutor with Wolsey Hall Oxford Distance Learning College. In addition to all that, I am home educating my daughter!
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am a friendly, encouraging tutor/teacher. I love teaching my subjects, meeting and building the confidence of young people and adult students alike and I assure you that I will always give of my best to help you reach your goals.
