Personal Message
Hello, my name is Peter Smith. For the past 15 years I have been teaching students from all over the world both as a private tutor and as a classroom teacher.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
English as a foreign language at all levels, I specialise in preparing students for the main University of Cambridge exams: FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS. More recently, there has been a demand for me to help individuals prepare for the TOEFL exam. In addition, I have considerable experience in assisting students in improving their English pronunciation and intonation.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a graduate from London University with a BA ( Hons ) degree in German. I also have the CELTA qualification from International House in Piccadilly London
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching in Edinburgh and in the West Lothian area for the past 15 years both as a private tutor and a teacher in a language school.
How much do you charge?
I charge £18 an hour for lessons.
Where do you teach?
I normally travel to to the students' homes, unless I am teaching online.
When are you available?
Currently my availability spans Monday to Saturday, with slots available on most days. As a committed Christian I usually avoid working on Sundays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I normally teach adults or teenagers who are 15 + years of age.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Many of my students have been successful in the main Cambridge exams: FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS and have gone on to study at a British university.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Vetted through disclosure Scotland (children and adults), and I have an up-to-date DBS Certificate.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
This is done over Skype.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am employed part-time by an American English language school, whose students I teach online. I have received an award from them for outstanding achievement in teaching English as a second language.
Where and with whom did you train?
My early teaching years were spent at the Arch School of English in Edinburgh.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently, I have students who I teach personally in Edinburgh, West Lothian or online. They include people from Russia, Poland, Japan, Brazil and Greece. At this time, most of my students are preparing for the International English Language Testing System exam, while others require TOEFL, general English or assistance with their pronunciation. Most recent successes include one of a woman from Greece who has passed IELTS with a band score of 8. Because of her success in an induction course and in the IELTS exam, she will now have the pick of the best universities in which to study nursing. Further, a physiotherapist, who qualified in Spain, has also passed the exam with an overall band score of 7, despite his dyslexia. He can now practise as a physiotherapist in the UK.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Many of my students, some of whom I have taught for over 5 years, have become valued lifetime friends. I see tutoring as a joint effort in which both tutor and student co-operate and share the success of their hard work. One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching is making a real contribution to the personal development of an individual.
