Personal Message
I teach spelling, reading, Maths and English to 8 to 17 year olds. I coach for Common Entrance (11+, 12+ and 13+) and GCSE English. Clients say that I am friendly, sympathetic, highly experienced, enormously effective and fun!
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach: Spelling and Reading to those aged 8 and above; English (all aspects i.e. handwriting, grammar, punctuation, fiction and non-fiction writing, comprehension, poetry, Shakespeare) for Keystage 2, 3 and 4; Maths for Keystage 2; Common Entrance (11+, 12+ and 13+) including Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning; and GCSE English. I can also help with most other subjects taught in preparatory schools and at Keystages 2 and 3.
Tell me about your qualifications.
BA (Durham) , PGCE ((distinction)Liverpool Hope). I was trained to teach in secondary schools and later trained (Reading University) to teach in primary schools.
What kind of experience do you have?
I am highly experienced, having taught pupils (aged 5 to 18) full-time in schools for over 20 years and having tutored individual children (aged 8 to 17) full-time for 8 years. I have taught in state and private (primary and secondary) schools. I have been inspected by OFSTED (‘outstanding’). I have tutored children who are struggling at school for any reason; those who have missed bits through illness or relocation; those who are insufficiently stimulated at school; those who need help with exam preparation; GCSE students who want to improve their grades or who simply need steering through revision. I have successfully prepared boys and girls for 11+ and 13+.
How much do you charge?
Keystage 2 Maths and English: £35 per hour. Keystage 3 English: £38 per hour. GCSE English : £40 per hour. Common Entrance (11+ and 13+): £40 per hour. Spelling: £40 per hour. Fees are payable half-termly and in advance.
Where do you teach?
I teach in a dedicated room here in Newbury, Berkshire which is on the M4, A4, A339 and A34 and so easily reached from Reading, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire. Because I have so many tutees, I regret to say that I cannot travel to students' homes.
When are you available?
I teach from Monday to Friday during West Berkshire school terms. I tutor full-time so am not tired after a day in school. Lessons are usually held after school, but can be during the day if the school is willing. Lessons during exeats and in the holidays may be available by arrangement.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach Maths and English to 8 to 17 year olds i.e. Keystage 2 to 4. I prepare students for 11+, 12+ and 13+ Common Entrance. I teach GCSE English. I teach Spelling and Reading as a specialist subject to any age over 8.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for: GCSE English
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an Enhanced CRB check from when I taught in school.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I was registered with the GTC (General Teaching Council) until it closed down!
Tell me about some of your current students.
A thumbnail sketch of some of my current tutees: 11+ candidate struggles to show her enormous ability on the page; year 4 pupil insufficiently stretched at school; year 8 pupil can't spell and doesn't understand his Maths teacher; GCSE English can't be bothered to apply himself. All these students, among others, are making huge progress as did those last year e.g. GCSE English student went from an F to a B; a 14 year old's spelling age went up by 3 years after 6 months' tuition.
