About Michael

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been tutoring privately since my secondary school days. Building on this experience and giving me the chance to refine my practice, I studied the psychological theory behind effective teaching and learning at University. I then put this into practice when I worked in an International school in the Netherlands where I taught a mindfulness programme I developed to KS2 students. I now work as an Assistant Educational Psychologist in a primary school. In this role, I create and implement individualised learning plans for students, in consultation with an educational psychologist, which are based on academic and personal goals. Some targets include carrying out intensive interventions with students and others are for supporting independent learning and study skills.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an enhanced DBS Certificate.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the British Psychological Society.

Hello there. I am a dynamic and enthusiastic tutor. I focus on fostering confidence and ability in my students through applying psychologically driven teaching and learning methods to the subjects in question.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I tutor literacy and numeracy in addition to study skills and exam preparation (including stress-reducing mindfulness activities).

- Tell me about your qualifications.

My BA and MSc degrees in Psychology mean that I can work as an Assistant Educational Psychologist with Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society. For ethical reasons, I can only support my private students academically, outside of my normal job. I am trained in supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including ADHD, ASD, Anxiety, Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.

- How much do you charge?

My fee is £55 per hour.

- Where do you teach?

I tutor at my students' homes. I am based in Greenwich and I am happy to travel in London.

- When are you available?

I am available on weekday evenings and weekends. Please contact me to confirm.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach KS 1, 2 and 3.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My tutoring style uses a person centred approach based on students' self-evaluation over time. Research shows that awareness and monitoring of your own progress and success as a learner provide the best outcomes. During my initial consultation with a student, we will discuss what level they feel they perform to, what their goal is and strategies we can use together to reach this. My aim is to first create a warm and nurturing environment, ensuring academic confidence by providing lots of opportunities for success. Tasks will be appropriately challenging whilst I provide the support necessary to progress. Regardless of success, reward for effort made is deeply important. Research shows that this empowers students to become self motivated and successful academics. Once we have reached a target (or if we hit a slump on the way), I will revisit the records from the initial consultation with my student and ask for their evaluation of their current level or ability. This reinforces the idea that practice and effort lead to progress and success.
