About Catherine

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have tutored English literature for six years from secondary school to PhD level, and I have also tutored creative writing, study skills, philosophy and psychoanalysis at a range of levels.

I have also taught undergraduate English and Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths for five years on a wide variety of topics, and I have taught undergraduate English and Creative Writing at Kingston for one year. At UCL I have convened an MA course in English and Psychoanalysis for three years, and I have supervised dissertations.

Along with teaching specific course syllabi, I have helped students with exam preparation, essay writing and dissertations. I have extensive experience of teaching academic writing skills, having run workshops on Effective Academic Writing. As a marker of university examinations in English and Philosophy, I am very familiar with marking criteria and especially attuned to what examiners look for in students' work.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

For online tutoring I teach by Skype. I also interact by email, set exercises, and offer essay commentary by email and in-line annotations.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My approach to tutoring is very much tailored to the individual student and their specific needs and goals. For instance, some students will require help with enhancing their critical skills, while others will need guidance with areas such as understanding and knowledge, using secondary reading, creating an argument, exam technique, and/or close reading skills. I like to start by considering the needs of the student and then establishing some aims for the tuition.

I am acutely aware that some of the most able students struggle to achieve the examination results they deserve for a variety of reasons (sometimes due to confidence, nerves, poor guidance, lack of training in examination skills, etc.), and so I am strongly committed to ensuring that my students fulfill their potential in their assessed work. To this end, along with teaching course syllabi, I like to teach academic study skills, including essay writing techniques, examination preparation, and effective revision skills. I am keen to set past papers and explore assessment criteria, so that students become familiar with exactly what examiners are looking for.

That said, it is my firm belief that students work best when they enjoy their subject, and so alongside attention to attainment, I aim to inspire and engage. Passion leads to hard work and success! Throughout my tutoring, I am delighted not only to have seen significant developments in the academic performance and confidence of my tutees, but also to see their passion and drive awakened. This is what makes tutoring a mutually rewarding experience.

In my tutorials, I like to encourage intellectual discussion. I am also happy to provide email support, and I return essays with in-line annotations and comments, offering detailed written feedback.

I am thrilled to have consistently achieved excellent results in my students – both in terms of raising academic attainment and enhancing their passion for study. Each year in my university teaching report, I have achieved the highest rank in teacher performance and I am delighted that students have named me an “outstanding” and “brilliant” teacher.

I look forward to hearing from you.
