Personal Message
I am an English specialist with a profound knowledge of both Language and Literature and a detailed knowledge of the requirements for all the major exam boards for GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A-levels.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an M.A. Joint Honours in English and French from the University of Glasgow and an LLB from the University of London.
What kind of experience do you have?
In the last four years, I have taught pupils both singly and in groups for A-Level, IB, GCSE and IGCSE, for all the major exam boards. I have taught students in Asia and mainland Europe (in such diverse locations as Singapore, Switzerland, Germany and Poland) as well as students around the UK, via Skype. I teach both high achievers in English, who typically want to increase their A grades to A* (one student recently went from an average A grade to the 97th percentile in her exam), and those students who struggle with English and simply wish to ensure a passing grade; such students normally achieve an improvement of at least two grade levels.
I have recently published two ebooks on literary analysis: one on Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' and one on Shakespeare's 'Henry V'.
How much do you charge?
I charge £35 or £30 an hour depending on the level. The first consultation is free.
Where do you teach?
I now teach mainly via Skype but am able to travel to pupils' homes in the local Canterbury area.
When are you available?
I am available from Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A-level students.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
A-level, IB, GCSE and IGCSE
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor via Skype to any location within a viable time zone.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I use a three-stage approach in lessons. Firstly, I examine a particular Language or Literature question in detail, getting the student's input and ensuring he or she understands how to select and analyse the relevant information and language. Secondly, I set homework based on the question discussed, with additional guidance on how to approach it. Thirdly, at the following lesson, I go over the homework, giving feedback on how the student's answer could be improved. Thus, each student gets the benefit of not only the hour's lesson but also considerable preparation and marking time. Since English involves learning a skill rather than memorising information, it does require a commitment to completing regular homework. It is preferable to gain this skill earlier rather than later in the year to allow for plenty of time to hone it before the exams.
Please contact me for a free no-obligation preliminary meeting to discuss any questions you may have.
