About Anthony
- What kind of experience do you have?
My experiences of working with children includes a wide variety of circumstances and needs. My current tutees range from primary school to early secondary. I work with tutees who are either at school, or are being home schooled. The range of abilities taught include those children who wish to excel in their chosen subjects, through to children who find learning a specific subject difficult and wish to improve their performance. Within the children I support, some children face specific barriers to learning such as autism and dyslexia.
as a classroom teacher and member of the management team, I have taught in several settings from inner city environments to surburban based schools. Whilst in the classroom my academic results were strong which were created from outstanding teaching practice, and strong relationships with children and parents. I have shared my passion for teaching by developing and supporting both new teachers to the profession, and those teachers wishing to improve their classroom practice.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
Training for teaching qualification was a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (S.C.I.T.T.) course provided by the Nottingham Trent University.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
This is the story of a single tutee which I support, however I feel it illustrates my passion, philosophy and expertise to enhance learning for children.
I started working with a student about two months ago. Their current experience of school life was quite upsetting for them, particularly in terms of their reading. They felt so low about the value of reading and how it made them feel about themselves that they no longer wished to go near a book.
Throughout the course of our sessions, we looked at reading from different viewpoints and perspectives, always with the positive and enriching experiences it could give. We tied in personal interests with the message that reading is for all, regardless of the level of skill and particular barriers encountered. For this student we looked at dealing with, and overcoming the barrier of dyslexia, and considered it as just one part of the wider skill sets of reading.
At the same time we concentrated and promoted their excellent comprehension skills and empathy for characters and events in the stories we shared.
Our last session together was a watershed moment. The student had independently read a whole book of their choice (only the second book they have ever completed) and written a review of the story to send to the author. This particular student then gave me the book to pass onto other dyslexic readers I work with, to encourage them; at the same time they set themselves the reading target of 'tougher books' to tackle next.
I have not written this to highlight my impact for this student, but rather to highlight just what potential this student has, and had lost along the way. As I said to her, those attributes and abilities were always there for her; together we have brought them from 'the back to the front'.
I cannot say how proud and excited I am for this child, but I know that in valuing herself more, the number of her opportunities to experience success has grown immensely.
