Which subject(s) do you teach?
Flute, saxophone and clarinet.
I am passionate about students having a full well-rounded music education and I have designed my own curriculum which forms part of each pupils instrumental lesson. It covers all aspects of aural, theory and general musicianship including World Music, Jazz and the different periods of Western Classical music.
For children aged 5-8, I have the option for learning the recorder, a specially designed flute or a specially designed reed instrument (easily transferrable to either clarinet or saxophone), which are ideal for small hands and lungs before they are ready to take on a full sized instrument.
Tell me about your qualifications.
BMus (Hons) in music performance on flute, doubling piccolo, from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
DipABRSM in instrumental teaching.
I also completed Teaching Skills and Workshop Leadership modules as part of my degree.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for 9 years and I have taught in many different situations over that time; from one-to-one lessons at home and in school, to workshops of 60 pupils or more. The breadth of my teaching experience has come from the Making Music Changing Lives project in Ely, Cardiff where I taught for 4 years. There I taught a group of 8 pupils on a weekly basis, and during the summer school led a group of about 60 children aged 5-11 in various musical workshop activities.

I currently teach pupils aged between 5 and 75, and I also have experience with children and adults with physical and learning disabilities.
How much do you charge?
Flute/saxophone/clarinet - 60 mins £26, 45 mins £22
Recorder or Young Student flute/reed - 45 mins £16, 30 mins £12

Where do you teach?
I teach privately from my home in Hucclecote, Gloucestershire where I have my bright, airy music room. There is plenty of parking and parents are most welcome to wait in the living room during the lesson.
When are you available?
I teach on weekdays and evenings, and I am available both term time and during school holidays (except for the two week break at Christmas and one week in the summer).
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I welcome all ages and abilities. I usually recommend that very young children begin on the recorder before progressing to another instrument, as it is easier for smaller hands and lungs. After they have grasped the fundamentals, however, it is very easy to progress to the flute quite quickly with the Young Student Flute.

I would recommend waiting until children are between 8 and 10 to begin the saxophone or clarinet, but it depends more on size than age. For budding clarinetists and saxophonists, I also have the option of a Young Student Reed instrument, which is an ideal transition instrument between the recorder and a full size reed instrument.

For adults, it is never too late to learn an instrument. It can be a very rewarding hobby, something relaxing to do after a hard day at work or something new to try after retirement.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I mainly use the Trinity syllabus, if students wish to take exams. I am also happy to use the ABRSM syllabus if you have a strong preference. I would recommend that young pupils have the experience of taking at least one exam, but I will never push any pupil young or older to take exams if they don't wish to.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a full Enhanced DBS certificate.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Musicians Union, and work to an MU approved contract.
