About Francis

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been tutoring in Ealing for six years. Godolphin & Latymer, Hampton, Latymer Upper, Merchant Taylors, Notting Hill and Ealing High School, St Augustine's, St Benedict's as well as Tiffin Girls' and Upton Court are just some of the schools to which my pupils have applied and been offered places in recent years.

I teach English to children aged between 7 and 12 years old. Over the years, the majority of my pupils have been preparing for entrance exams to independent secondary schools or grammar schools on the west side of London.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English and Literacy at Key Stage 2. This is mainly in preparation for 11+ exams and private senior school entrance exams but I also see this age group for general remedial help and to fill any gaps left as a result of not understanding something in class or missing school.
Ideally, I will start tutoring a pupil between 6 and 18 months before they intend to sit their entrance exams although I have tutored pupils for two years or more in the past.

Depending on time restrictions, I prefer to start with an initial hour-long introduction lesson. In this session, I will find out the child's interests as well as their English strengths and weaknesses so I can cater future lessons to their precise needs. I always prefer for a parent to be present at this session so I can also gauge their opinions on their child's ability as well as understand their hopes and ambitions. Inevitably, over the following few lessons, I will still be establishing the best approach but straight away we will be working to improve the child's weaknesses. I will often begin by focusing on problems with punctuation, spelling and basic grammar and then, gradually move towards those areas required for 11+ entrance exams such as comprehension skills and descriptive writing.

I am always happy to set homework, particularly with elder children, although it should always be down to the parents to decide whether or not the child has the time to do it.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I graduated from the University of East Anglia in 2006 with a 2.1 in English Literature and Creative Writing.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 per hour's lesson.
As entrance exam season approaches, I offer 90 minute exam practice sessions - at £50 - where I will set an exam paper for the pupil with time at the end to go through it together identifying areas for improvement.

- Where do you teach?

I tutor in central Ealing. In the past, my pupils have travelled from Acton, Brentford, Chiswick, Hammersmith, Isleworth...etc

- When are you available?

I tutor in the afternoons and evenings of Mondays and Tuesdays.
During school holidays, I am always willing to offer more flexible times.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach English to children aged between 7 and 12 years old - primarily my work is focused around Key Stage 2.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am always happy to be contacted by parents and discuss possibilities by email or over the phone.
If we find we are able to arrange tuition, I am confident you will notice improvements in your child's English work in weeks.
