Personal Message
I'm an experienced guitar tutor who has recently moved to the South Side. I have been playing for over 20 years and decided to offer lessons about six years ago. As I really enjoyed working with students I have kept on doing it.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Guitar, acoustic or electric,
Pop vocals,
Tell me about your qualifications.
I'm a graduate (BA/MA) and qualified teacher (PGCE London) and member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors, ( London College of Music)
What kind of experience do you have?
As a performer, I have played about 400 gigs, either on guitar, Bass or Mandolin. I am also a lead singer. I have recently set up a Folk-Rock band in Glasgow and am now doing plenty of gigs here.
I have also worked with dozens of guitar students at my old address, in England.
How much do you charge?
Basically, £25 per hour. (£13 half and hour) but I may have to add on mileage if you are more than 5 miles from the South Side. We can also work in groups: so if you have any friends who also want to learn, we can discuss group prices. You may also have to buy music books.
Where do you teach?
I'm a mobile tutor: I come to you. It helps if you can provide a quiet room with upright chairs and a music stand. I'm in Glasgow south side and prefer short travel distances. No more than 10 miles from G44.
When are you available?
I'm available most weekdays, depending on my diary, but I usually don't teach at weekends as I'm doing gigs then.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have taught age groups, from 8 to 80. I don't think that very young children find it easy to get their fingers round the stringed instruments, but they can have good fun using the voice to get started on music.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can offer graded exams from the Rock School or RGT course. I have experience teaching up to grade 5. I have also recently been to a conference on the London College of Musis Pop vocals syllabus and am pleased to say it is very good. I often work with people who want to work on their singing and I can help with the guitar accompaniment. Any songs you want to work on, I can help, perhaps changing the keys if the original does not suit your vocal range.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have PVG registration.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can use Skype or FaceTime, if that method suits you. We simply have to book a time when we will both not be interrupted by noise, such as the TV or phones ringing.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Musicians' Union & RGT/ LCM
Where and with whom did you train?
Self taught.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Some are working out licks from their favourite bands, some are working on performance pieces for school and some are studying particular guitar pieces for National 4 or 5 exams in music. Many want to improve their confidence with singing: either while strumming the guitar or with me as their backing band.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Do you love music and feel that you can get more out of it? Give me a call and we'll see what we can achieve together.
