About Lucy
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have spent the most recent part of my career working in an incredibly results driven, high pressure environment, with students ranging from extremely challenging to very talented, and ensuring they achieve the best possible exam results. My last GCSE class had a 100% A*-C pass rate despite a handful of students entering the course with predictions of an E grade. However, where I added most value in my department was in pushing B students up to A students and A students up to A* students.
Before teaching, I worked as a corporate lawyer in London, using the analytical skills from my history training. I worked with a range of high-profile clients doing mainly merger and acquisition projects before becoming a bit disillusioned and bored. I wanted to return to the subject I love and so became a history teacher, which was the best career decision I have made so far.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date DBS certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained as a teacher at an outstanding academy in West London, working full time while completing my PGCE in History.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Historical Association.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I recently worked with some students who had done well at GCSE receiving Bs and As but were consistently getting Ds or worse on the work they were completing at A-Level. As is often the case, they had been coached within an inch of their lives to maximise their marks at GCSE and were still using the same language and techniques taught to them in year 10. The transition to A-level is tricky and after six weeks away you are supposed to come back to school suddenly a more sophisticated historian with an elegant, analytical written style.
Most students require some sort of help to achieve this but for my students the teachers were bogged down in covering the vast amount of complex content that technique and exam skill was something they felt they needed more help with. One of the students I worked with, who really struggled, assured me she would fail her A-level and maybe get a D "on a good day". She got a B and met her university offer.

I am an experienced and graded 'outstanding' history teacher based in Beaconsfield. I offer a personalised, bespoke service for each of my students who will receive their own file with relevant resources for your course.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach History.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a degree in Ancient History from Warwick University.
After graduating I went on to study my Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course before completing my training to qualify as a solicitor in the City.
I later re-trained as a teacher whilst working full time at an OFSTED outstanding academy and completing my PGCE in History with distinction.
- How much do you charge?
For students requiring some support or confidence building at KS3 - £35 per hour
For GCSE support - £40 per hour
For maximising your A-Level results - £45 per hour. However, I strongly recommend that given the complexity and amount of written work involved with A-level that students complete 90 minute sessions at £55.
Please note 90 minute sessions are available for GCSE students on the run up to exams
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home office in Beaconsfield, South Bucks, just off of the A40. I am particularly handy for students in Wycombe, Gerrards Cross, Chalfont and Marlowe but can cater for all students within easy reach of the A40.
- When are you available?
I offer general availability Monday - Thursday between 4 - 6pm and Saturday mornings 8 - 11am.
Slots are given away each academic year on a first come first served basis. However, I will do my best to accommodate you.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students from 11-18. From key stage 3 through to GCSE and A-level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
History GCSE, AS and A-level.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
My teaching style is fundamentally positive and outside of the formality of the classroom I want students to feel relaxed and confident. You are already under enough pressure, I am here to work as your team mate to motivate you and support you to achieve your best possible grade. I am all about exam technique, written style and the small details that will keep inching your grades upwards.
