About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
I was a drama tutor at Theatrix Performing Arts School in St Albans, Hertfordshire for nearly three years. I taught a collection of private students as well as after-school groups in my area from ages 10yrs+. I have worked also for organisations such as St Albans Film Festival; Living The Dream and Access for Work.
I am a working professional director with extensive professional acting experience. I have written and performed in an award winning film; I am a trained radio presenter and I have also established my own theatre company called, Speechless Theatre Company. I have directed productions of both new writing as well as classical plays with success. I have a 99% pass rate with students I have taken through Trinity College London acting exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a DBS certificate with my previous employer; Theatrix Performing Arts, St Albans. And with my previous volunteering at Bromley-by-Bow Centre, E1.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Testimonials:
"James taught our 12 year old son drama for two years from 2013 to July 2015. The lessons were well structured, prepared, and William quickly progressed. Much more importantly however, he found James to be a completely inspiring, fun, teacher, who gave an initially shy, stuttering boy, the confidence to perform solo on stage at our local theatre and even to write his own monologue without the lessons ever feeling 'like school' and without feeling in anyway pressurised. William looked forward to every one of his lessons and gained immeasurably from the experience. Thus, I can highly recommend James as a drama tutor of exceptional ability."
- Louise Gross, mother to William
"If you are looking for a drama teacher who is fun, dedicated and professional, James is your man. He helped me in many different ways, enacting real life situations and role play. James used different techniques to help me have a full understanding of monologues and how to get into character. He would also breakdown Shakespeare in a way that helped me understand the context of the piece. I am currently studying at UAL Drama Centre and James played a big part in helping me pass my grade 8 drama and achieve that goal, I couldn't have done it without him. I have no hesitation in recommending James to anyone who wants to improve their acting skills."

I always try to engage my student to propose their own ideas in their drama work. There is nothing better than engaging the creative mind. I like to use improvisations, games and also ensure that a student study scripts carefully.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I exclusively teach drama and theatre studies. However, this can include anything from working on A-Level coursework; one-to-one audition preparation; assisting a group on their devised work; or perhaps advice on drama degrees and drama schools. I have a (nearly) 100% pass rate on Trinity College London performance examinations (both group and solo).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a Resident Trainee Director at the Kings Head Theatre, Islingoton. I have recently been the Assistant Director on Loot by Joe Orton at The Park Theatre.
I trained as an actor at RADA in London and I have a First Class BA (Hons) Drama from the University of East Anglia. I was an active member of the National Youth Theatre for 8 years and also run my own theatre company called Speechless Theatre Company.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £20 for a one hour private one-to-one class - be it in person or online. I also do half-hour classes for £15. However, I change my prices depending on group sizes and the length of a lesson.
If I am required to travel (within M25) I charge an additional £5. If the travel distance to a class is a long distance then I will negotiate a payment for the time taken to travel and travel costs. If a class is organised last-minute and I have to pay for rehearsal space then I will divide this cost with the client.
- Where do you teach?
I live on a boat on the waterways of London. My location is always changing, but I can travel to most places.
- When are you available?
I have excellent availability and work freelance.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all levels of experience and am not limited by age.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Trinity College London examinations, Drama School auditions. School Scholarship entrance auditions. Public showcases. A-Level performances.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
My online tutoring is done using Skype. In the past, when preparing students for auditions I have recommended doing a lot of text analysis and preparation online, before one-to-one lessons in person.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
It is important to me that you have fun and drama & theatre includes a great deal of play.. So lets enjoy ourselves first and foremost!
