Ashley Bonfante
Saxophonist, Composer, Educator

Born in London, England, Ashley Bonfante showed enthusiasm for music at an early age, playing the cello, clarinet and saxophone at school and for local youth programmes. It soon became clear, however, that it was on the saxophone that Ashley would excel and at the age of 14 he was chosen to perform alongside internationally renowned jazz violinist, Chris Garrick at the Royal Albert Hall in collaboration with Harrow Young Musicians.

Ashley successfully applied to the Junior Guildhall School of music in London soon after his 15th birthday. Working with artists such as Jefferey Wilson, Olllie Weston and Victoria Soames Samek allowed him to further his understanding of the saxophone and develop his general musicianship over the next couple of years.

In 2009 Ashley moved to Birmingham to study for his undergraduate degree in Jazz (Bmus Hons). During his time at the Birmingham Conservatoire, Ashley has been lucky enough to perform and work with artists such as John Taylor (piano), Jeff Ballard (drums), George Colligan (piano), Mark Turner (saxophone), Mike Williams (saxophone), Hans Koller (composition/piano), Percy Pursglove (trumpet/bass), Andrew Bain (drums), Jean Toussaint (saxophone), Julian Arguelles (saxophone), Iain Dixon (saxophone) and Arnie Somogyi (bass).
What kind of experience do you have?
Once he graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire with Honours, Ashley was an active member of the Birmingham jazz scene consistently working with local musicians on new projects whilst hosting various residencies around the city. In 2015 Ashley worked with local musicians Mark Pringle (piano), Benedict Muirhead (bass) and Euan Palmer (drums) on his debut album 'Ashley Bonfante Quintet'.

Ashley spent 2016-17 in Paris forming collaborative musical projects with artists from Paris and New York alike. During his stay he performed in renowned jazz clubs such as Cave du Riv 38, Sunset-Sunside, Madame Louis, Le Baiser Salé and Péniche Le Marcounet.

Alongside his work as a performer, Ashley has been teaching privately and in schools (Birmingham, Paris, London) for a number of years now.
