Personal Message
I am a skilled and experienced qualified teacher, with more than thirty years experience. I enjoy the opportunity to work with individual children or adults, tailoring a learning programme to meet each student's very specific needs.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Literacy, English (KS2 and KS3), and GCSE English Language and Literature. All include reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting. Literacy is at KS2, English at KS3 and GCSE English is at KS4. Some 11 - 14 year olds need additional reinforcement of the basics of Literacy. Others are ready to be stretched towards GCSE. I teach ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) at any level and support a number of students in Higher Education with writing and other forms of study support. I provide support for children and adults with dyslexia or dyspraxia. I teach Business English and preparation for IELTS exams.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a qualified teacher (PGCE) with additional qualifications including specialisms in teaching Literacy, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Dyslexia Support.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for over 30 years. Much of my career has been spent in Adult and Community Education. I have also worked in many schools, delivering Family Literacy, supporting schools and parents to work together for the benefit of the children's education. I have delivered Initial Teacher Training courses and worked as an Expert Practitioner, delivering Continuous Professional Development courses. I worked for an education charity in the North East for five years and now combine support work in schools with personal tuition.
How much do you charge?
I charge £28 an hour. I don't charge for the initial consultation meeting. I charge a mileage rate of 40p per mile for any journey to a student's home which is further than fifteen minutes drive from my home.
Where do you teach?
I normally teach in the students' homes or, for adult students, in a library or cafe in a convenient location. Currently I cover Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Ponteland and Darras Hall. It may be possible to travel to other areas.
When are you available?
I am available after school from Monday to Friday. I am also available during the day by arrangement for adult learners. Apart from the Christmas holidays and my family summer holiday, I am available to teach through half terms, Easter and the summer holidays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach across the age range, through Primary and Secondary Education. I also teach children with diagnosed Specific Learning Difficulties or Dyspraxia. Finally I also teach young people and adults in Further or Higher Education.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for KS2 SATs, GCSE English, local Entrance Examinations for the Royal Grammar School and Dame Allan's School in Newcastle, and IELTS exams.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up to date Enhanced DBS Certificate.
Where and with whom did you train?
My degree and PGCE were both at Manchester University. My Literacy Specialism was completed at Bolton University and my Trinity College London TESOL Certificate was completed at City College Manchester.
Tell me about some of your current students.
From September 2017 I am working with children and young people from Year 4 to Year 11. These include students preparing for their GCSE English Language and English Literature exams in 2018. I am teaching children who need support with reading comprehension, spelling and general writing. I provide preparation for the KS2 SATs tests. I continue to provide longer term support to a number of children who lack confidence or generally find English a struggle.

I have helped two young people achieve their target grades, or better, in the new GCSE English exams in 2017 and one young person to achieve his target grade in a GCSE English Language resit exam.

I have been successful in preparing children this year for entrance to Dame Allan's School and the Royal Grammar School. I am preparing two more children to sit the entrance examinations in 2018. I am working with a number of children and young people have diagnosed Specific Learning Difficulties or Dyspraxia. I have been teaching two sets of Japanese brothers, developing their English speaking and listening skills.

I am teaching a number of foreign students who want to improve their everyday English Speaking and Listening Skills usually, but not always, in preparation for IELTS exams.
Do you have a personal message for students?
It doesn't matter how old you are or what stage you have reached. I will always work to help you learn more, fill in any gaps, grow in confidence and achieve the very best you can.
